Here's a grim little tidbit. I was just talking to a friend of mine who still works at the newspaper where I used to work, and she told me that pedestrians get killed by cars so often these days that they don't cover them as news anymore unless the victim was well known or the driver was arrested.

@MLE_online

Something like 30% of ped fatalities is folks reading their prayer tablet or zoned out on earbuds.

I yell at them once in a while like a crazy old person when they mill around on a public roadway.

They are never grateful for some reason.

@n_dimension where do you live that people reading prayer tablets are milling about in roadways?
@MLE_online @n_dimension in an imaginary world where drivers are never responsible.
@geonz @n_dimension i think if we get past the rhetoric, most of us can agree that a lot of drivers drive dangerously and that a lot of pedestrians are distracted by their electronic devices, and that if both paid more attention to their surroundings and we made our infrastructure less overtly car oriented, a lot fewer people would die
@MLE_online @n_dimension it's the actually doing something about it that is hard wiht car culture so dominant. (Oh, and fossil fuels...)

@geonz @MLE_online

I like the Swedish model of road safety.

EVERY accident is the fault of the road and requires re-engineering of the roadway/signage/ingress/egress

Yeah, less infrastructure making us use cars, and less infrastructure making us use phones.

@geonz @MLE_online

Ultimately, you are the only person responsible for your safety.

If you lean over the waterhole without looking around for crocs or tigers, you kinda deserve to be eaten.

@n_dimension @MLE_online Bullies and abusers talk like that all the time. Doesn't make it right.
@n_dimension @geonz building a city where most of the outside world is set up to be paths for crocs and tigers and then saying people should take responsibility for being attacked is a silly take

@MLE_online @n_dimension @geonz granted, I do share that observation: #Smombies are real and I've seen people just randomly cross the road out of nowhere, being in full black matte stealth clothing during moonless winter nights, and more than once I wasn't shure if they are just stupid or if they attempted a "traffic suicide' cuz I had people try that too, crossing a road with direction lanes blocking barriers in the middle.

  • I only have excellent eyesight - espechally at night - so it only ended with me honking or flashing the highbeams as they didn't even realize I had to floor the brakes and the vehicle behind me thinks I was "brake-checking" them to provoke an accident, rather than preventing someone with no sense of self-preservation from becoming a chalkout line and getting their pronous changed to was/were.

And mind you those weren't like schoolkids racingnagainst the clock to be on time at school, but grown adults at late night when every under-16 would have police pull over and ask them what they're doing outside, giving them a lift back home and asking the parents to please not let their kids roam alone at 23:45 outside.

#sarcasm #traffic

@enobacon @MLE_online @n_dimension @geonz I mean, I drive cautious af, but you too wouldn't expect people walking around on a motorway like it's a pedestrian area...
@kkarhan @MLE_online @n_dimension @geonz I hope they find the traffic Engineers who did this.

@enobacon @MLE_online @n_dimension @geonz nah, it's nit tue traffic engineers but intentional misconduct by said people.

  • Highway police usually takes care quickly of "people walkingbarounf on the highway"
@n_dimension @geonz If you are operating heavy equipment, it is your responsibility not to hit anyone, not the responsibility of the person you might hit

@cinebox @geonz

Depends on the local laws.

Sweden: Pedestrian has right of way everywhere

US: Pedestrians are fed into woodchippers to make roads more secure for cars.

N. B. The "crime" of Jaywalking was invented in the US at the dawn of the motor age to shift the blame for road fatalities to pedestrians not vehicles.

@n_dimension if you decide to operate heavy machinery where people are, you are responsible for it.
