I think having an ASN would fix me 😌
…I don’t suppose anyone following me can help with getting me an ASN (at RIPE, if I understood correctly)
Okay, Anycast any% letsgo
@fasterthanlime happy to answer questions as someone who did just this from 0 a month or two ago

@whitequark any realistic edge providers besides Vultr? (and excluding big dedicated nodes?)

I emailed HostHatch to ask what "additional costs" means, we'll see.

@fasterthanlime rn i'm using Rage4 because i don't anticipate having the resources to get a /24
@whitequark right! I found some /24 for ~90$ a month on IPXO, much lower than what I thought it would be.
@whitequark Honestly, Rage 4 probably would have been more than enough...

@fasterthanlime that still gets you using bgp, hihi

til about IPXO, this might be very useful actually

@whitequark as for the AS, I'm getting it from https://www.servperso.net/ — And I guess an extra VPS from there because I need two peerings?
Servperso Systems - BGP & LIR Services for small network operators

Servperso Systems - BGP & RIPE LIR services for small network operator

@fasterthanlime rn grebedoc has nine >.> (via rage4)

depending on how you're getting your space, you might be asked to provide two peer ASNs

@fasterthanlime oh sorry, reading comprehension failure. yeah that should be fine
@whitequark yeah it'd be Vultr+ServPerso or HostHatch+ServPerso
@fasterthanlime @whitequark ripe is removing the on-paper requirement to have two upstreams btw, but
@fasterthanlime @whitequark if you get the chance to connect to any of the IXPs listed on https://www.peeringdb.com/net/23070 you can also get transit from @pcdog 's freetransit service.

Currently going a bit crazy with my ASN myself

@fasterthanlime rage4 works fine, only major complaint is you have to pay for egress

@fasterthanlime @whitequark IPXO's typical customer base is a bit of a cesspool, FWIW.

My immediate reaction upon seeing that name is "blackhole".

@ryanc @whitequark What would you recommend for IPv4 leasing? cause... you have to get them from _somewhere_
@fasterthanlime @whitequark The only IP leasing companies I'm aware of are the ones on my shit list. Digital Energy Technologies is the worst one, if they still exist.
@ryanc @whitequark I mean, yeah, the people who can afford to spend 7k on a /24 are probably less likely to cause trouble than the ones who are leasing it, but I don't think I want to invest into IPv4 that hard right now x)
@fasterthanlime @whitequark Leasing it from your upstream is probably the best way to get IP ranges that aren't radioactive.

@ryanc @whitequark In this case my upstream would be Vultr, right? I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that the customer base of Vultr is not exactly well behaved either?

(Also they don't lease IPv4 afaict)

@ryanc @fasterthanlime @whitequark if you need to lease from not-your-ISP I recommend Cogent. Yes, that Cogent that sells budget bandwidth.

I don't recommend IPXO for various reasons too.
Lease IPv4 Blocks at a Flat Rate | GetIPv4

Lease geolocation adjustable Cogent IPv4 blocks ranging from /24 to /8 at a flat rate. Deployed in just 17 business days. Perfect for businesses needing reliable IP addresses.

GetIPv4
@fasterthanlime @neel @whitequark I don't like Cogent for various reasons, but I wouldn't blackhole them, so...
@ryanc @neel @whitequark What are your feelings about https://interlir.com/ ?
@fasterthanlime @neel @whitequark never heard of them which is a mildly positive indicator
@fasterthanlime @ryanc @whitequark most IP leasing customers are cess pools, sadly. But if you don't intend to send emails you shouldn't have too many IP reputation problems

If you do want to send emails you'll be spending ages cleaning up the blocks reputation
@erincandescent @ryanc @whitequark I'm currently sending transactional email from a stalwart mail instance running on Hetzner. I guess it's a miracle any of my emails arrive?
@fasterthanlime @whitequark IPv4 prices fell since 2022 quite a bit
@whitequark @fasterthanlime folks at route64.org recently added anycast as “donationware” and afair there is no bandwidth charges. But I haven’t tried setting up anycast yet
@fasterthanlime iirc with HostHatch it's a $10 setup fee PER LOCATION, free afterwards
@fasterthanlime also you can look at https://bgp.cheap and https://bgp.services for options
bgp.cheap

@fasterthanlime For ARIN it was fairly painless, fwiw. Didn't need to know anybody on the inside.
@fasterthanlime although the RIPE fees seem steep compared to ARIN unless you get an LIR sponsor?.
I've heard good things about https://lagrange.cloud/products/lir.

@fasterthanlime Depends. Are you willing to open thy wallet?

(
@openfactory 👀)
@fasterthanlime i'm currently in the process of getting one from @openfactory
@whitequark @fasterthanlime oh, nice! If it’s not a trade secret much they charge for ASN allocation and what’s their yearly fees?
@fasterthanlime https://www.opdop.net/ may help depending on what you want.. Local ISPs may help as well..
opdop.net

@fasterthanlime peut-être que @acontios peut t'aider cela dit ! ;-)
@fasterthanlime I’ve got mine from lagrange.cloud last year. They basically charge RIPE fees with thiiiiin margin. Haven’t had any issues since then. And from various posts they sound like a decent option
