He does, actually. During the NYC mayoral election, Trump endorsed Cuomo and threatened to deport Mamdani, calling him a communist.
And yet after they met in person, Mamdani was able to charm Trump without backing down on anything he has previously said.
Trump acknowledged they disagree on many things but agree on wanting NYC to succeed and the observation that the American public has no interest in the neoliberal politics embraced by Republicans and centrist Democrats.

He does. Mamdani has a lot of the public's attention right now. Trump even remarked how his meeting with him drew far greater interest from the media than when he's met with heads of state.
They couldn't be farther apart politically or ethically, but Mamdani has a gift for staying on message while remaining affable.

Another take away from this meeting was Mamdani standing next to Trump, addressing a room full of reporters with cameras, asserting that Israel is committing a genocide in Palestine, and that the American government is helping to fund it.

By taking Trump’s quotes at face value, he was low key calling him out on his bullshit while ostensibly expressing agreement with him on his stated goals, if not his strategies for achieving them. It was diplomacy 101.
Bottom line, this meeting served to de-escalate NYC’s tensions with the WH in exchange for letting Trump share some of Mamdani’s aura.

Mamdani also spoke to the economic interests of those who voted for Trump as a rejection of the neoliberal status quo, in direct contrast to the Democratic Party’s desperate attempts to defend the very policies that paved the way for Trump while trying to appease the fascists and oligarchs.
Let’s not forget how those same corporate Dems just voted w/Republicans to “condemn socialism” as a direct attack against progressives like Mamdani.
