@elaterite @nixCraft She said she writes longhand and only types it into Word as a final step.
She's not the only person who feels that connection between mind and hand she describes.
From what I've heard from other professional writers, publishers will only accept submissions in the form of Microsoft Word documents. I don't know why. I read a writer say this, who has written books on the fine details of Linux and Unix tools, so it's certainly not someone unaware of alternatives.
@foolishowl I don't get it? LibreOffice exports in a variety of formats including .doc and .docx. Fully functional documents with correction tracking &c.
@krig Good to know about the EU. Back in OpenOffice days, I took a banner I had created to the local university library to print it. It was in an OO format. They said they couldn't print it. I suggested they install OO. They said they were unable to do that as it would violate the academic MS agreement or contract whatever. So I had to export it in PDF and take it back to get it printed.
@nixCraft I honestly don't think they care.
It's only productive users that are being pissed off by it, and the choice of using MS/Office is typically made by managers, and other sorts who eat up the hype...
@FunkyBob @nixCraft ... Schools... And which student wouldn't love to get her/his homework written by someone else for "free"!?
And schools get the licences for free so students learn this software and schools argument with it's business standard and business argument with the people knew it.
I hate Microsoft and AI.
I'm so lucky to be in a position where I don't have to use them.
@nixCraft "but she engaged with it! It means users love it! Put more AI in things!"
- Some tech bro, probably
Sadly, I am 100% certain that they know.
Microsoft, Google and many other tech companies have become reliant on investment by the fossil fuel industry.
It's an industry determined to retain its primacy via international state surveillance platforms.
Product development is entirely devoted to embedding spyware in everything.
Vehicles. Phones. Software. Household appliances. Drones. Nuclear
Trump just sold nuclear technology to the funders of 9/11.

@nixCraft This! And Colbert's remark then: "Have you thought about showing your computer your screenwriting Oscar?" ๐
