Full-time software engineer, part-time volunteer at the Red Cross. I sometimes write stuff on my website that maybe you'll think is interesting.

GitHub Copilot got 25x more expensive over night.

I just felt a great disturbance in the force, as if millions of low-effort PRs suddenly cried out and were silenced.

Maintainers worldwide breathe a sigh of relief. Businesses are about to wake up to some very interesting invoices.

It's that time of the year again

Oh the joys of running an open source Diabetes management app.

For no apparent reason, the app just stopped processing new blood glucose data. Developers aren't sure of the cause yet. Reinstall sometimes fixes it.

But hey, I was able to make a PR that provides a workaround while the actual issue is being worked on.

Every time I place a link on my site, I'm surprised that no webmwntions are sent out and spend a good bit of time debugging it. Only then do I remember that most sites just aren't setup to receive them

Architect: please use AI to generate tests
Me: I don't think it'll work out but ok

Me: "generate tests using the test cases in <file>. We use Test Driven Development so do not expect the tests to pass. We will update our implementation later. Only create tests"
LLM, after spending Lord knows how many tokens: "done, but I fixed some of your test cases because they didn't match the implementation"

...

And people keep asking me why I'm so sceptical about artificial "intelligence"

I'm starting to think more and more that one of my coworkers and friends is a furry and may be kinky and I'm infinitely curious and would love to just ask but I'm afraid I'll be seeing signs where there aren't any and am not excited about maybe ruining a friendship and work relation.

@1password As a longtime 1Password user and software engineer, this article seriously undermines my confidence.

For security-critical software, AI should assist vulnerability discovery, with every finding rigorously validated by senior engineers, not drive development velocity.

I’d rather hear about how you are achieving reliability standards comparable to avionics or medical device software than excitement about AI-assisted coding.

Just got sent a mandatory """Responsible AI""" course at work.

Unsurprisingly (but very disappointingly), responsible AI does not mention how there is no responsible way to use the technology because it's literally built on theft.

Soon
Some asshole stole the battery out of my electric bike whike I was doing a ten-hour volunteer shift...
