I hate AI for a ton of reasons but lately it’s because it’s taken the joy out of scrolling through funny animal videos online. I can’t tell if that funny cat video is real any more so what’s the point? #FuckAI

Yet another thing AI has ruined for all of us - Nostalgic fun.

I came across these cool, nostalgic pictures supposedly from the set of #StarTrek TOS classic episode City on the Edge of Forever.

I squealed w/joy because I’ve NEVER seen them before. The comments were filled with happy Trek fans but close scrutiny reveals they must be AI slop. The last pict is NOT Joan Collins plus other clues.

None of us can trust anything online anymore and it royally sucks.

#FuckAI

The alternative of course, is that these images are real. The woman in the last image could very well be a stand in for Joan Collins. But the mere fact that AI makes me doubt myself and/or forces me to do the work to find out whether they are real or not, takes all the fun out of it.

It’s a total Kobayashi Maru situation #StarTrek #FuckAI

@gedeonm I was looking for hints like consistencies in Shatners coat and pattern in his shirt between the photos. Or the text on the clapper boards, wardrobe on other people etc. Is AI at the point where it can maintain fine structure between scenes?

The problem, as you say, is it's hard to know for sure. These could be real but unless the physical negatives surface we won't know and that sucks.

@bartreardon They are all too perfect to be real. The lighting especially, even the distant shots is nearly perfectly even. Cameras and crew are all evenly distributed in the backgrounds. They text on all the clappers make no sense and are again too perfectly written. I’m like 99.8% sure it’s all slop.
@gedeonm I hear ya. I came across some very similar material on TikTok, clips claiming to be behind-the-scenes on The Matrix. At first they looked legit, but a couple things looked a bit unbelievable and I was immediately flooded with the feeling that everything I saw was AI. *sigh* 😔
@gedeonm Have you come across this tool? fotoforensics.com
It takes a bit of work but is worth a play. There’s tutorials. I couldn’t do much with these pics as I’m using my iPad, it’s better on a computer. Looking at the initial analysis though, it doesn’t show any obvious alterations. Then again if they’re AI generated, maybe there wouldn’t be 🤷‍♀️
@crystalentity interesting, thx for that. The more I look at these photos though the more I’m convinced they ai. They’re all too perfect. They have classic telltale signs of AI construction, including the light leaks at the sides to make them try to look old, even though the lighting in all of the images is perfect and even. Add to that the crew members aren’t actually looking through the viewfinders of the cameras and other clues and it’s AI.
@gedeonm isn't the boom mike in the last picture too modern with a foam wind shield ?
@hub Yes, one of the many clues.
@gedeonm She did a one off guest appearance episode. Whether these are authentic images or manufactured is open to debate.
@gedeonm the last image clapper text is nonsensical babble. 100% AI. Also they all look weirdly staged.
@gedeonm it’s pretty shocking how quickly it happened. Nothing can be trusted.

@jblake @gedeonm it is *shocking* how fast this happened. An eyeblink.

I still remember being stupefied that you could write a plain-language image description and get an image. And then I saw people writing plain-language descriptions and getting *apps*, and that was also stupefying, and then three weeks later, it's the new normal.

It's hard to define "modern", but I think one measure of modernity is the speed at which miracles become commodified. I've never seen that happen this fast, ever.

@gedeonm Yeah, this weekend I reshared a compilation of housecats warning off bears, and two different people said "I bet that's all AI", and it made me never want to share anything I didn't personally make ever again. 🙃

Doesn't even matter whether they're right—which they probably were, on reflection—because I don't want to be associated with that crap even accidentally.

@jwisser @gedeonm no shit. I was shared a video of dogs saving babies from falling and 9 of the 10 clips in it were AI-generated. It’s sad.
@gedeonm That's every video on earth. We're ina new world.
@gedeonm is there any way to recognize a fake ai animal video? ( or just a fake ai video)
@denpanek0 Going through them frame by frame and looking for oddness but it’s getting harder and harder. Not worth the effort IMHO.
@gedeonm hmmm, maybe there will be an auto detect AI content feature and based on AI

@gedeonm I don’t think I’ve noticed funny pet AI.

I don’t think the keyboard playing cat was AI.

@gedeonm
the cat may be fake, but your emotions are real.
that's the point. 🤔
