@gullevek I have to admit, I find this method somewhat elegant - but not very helpful for kids.

Adapting the latin alphabet to another language is usually a pain. English is a good example.

Our preferred Hepburn system is easy to read for westerners, but for a language as poor in sounds as Japanese unnecessarily complicated.

Reversely, it could serve as an eye opener for kids that e.g. the consonant sound in sa vs shi is different.

This method negates that possibility.

@kimtaro @gullevek They’ve been switching, abolishing, and getting rid of this for at least 30 years, if not more. It’s always the same old: “By year XY, we’ll finally scrap kunreishiki”. Then, of course, there’s a roadblock tied to that ancient IT backend of theirs, and it’s rinse and repeat. I remember a campaign from the '90s with some mascot - a pink elephant or something equally unforgettable. And here we are, still waiting. Classic.

@gullevek I must admit, there are only a few things out of billions that really trigger me, and kunreishiki is one of them. Just seeing it triggers me to the max. And no, I’m not a native English speaker-not even close. I’ll die on this hill: it’s BS that kunreishiki matches the actual pronunciation. It doesn’t. My best guess is that someone cooked it up just to keep busy so they could get their otsukaresama. This is classic reinventing the wheel and make it just weirdly complicated
