I am not buying it. Nvidia clearly has an incentive to sell this as an arms race, which it is; however, to what extent? They are using fear tactics so that the government will pay Nvidia to give it to OpenAI, which will then give it to Oracle, AWS, Microsoft; subsequently, they will buy more GPUs, allowing them to invest it back in OpenAI. One hell of a circular deal, also causing massive tech layoffs and environmental damage. #ai
A couple of months ago, he was crying about how the Trump administration's ban on GPU exports to China was a big issue. Now, the Chinese government itself has banned NVIDIA GPUs out of fear of backdoors. So now he is crying about it again, but this time he's changed his tune. These people have absolutely overhyped the machine learning and AI fields for personal gain.
@nixCraft
China is arguably *ahead* of the U.S. and the rest of the world in LLM technology, judging by the surprises in LLM that they keep releasing (most recently about gains from using images instead of text in training, awkwardly labeled "OCR" although that isn't the right label even if it *was* the Chinese who chose it)
@dougmerritt @nixCraft That China for the most part isn’t pursuing ”god-in-a-box” style strategies aimed to elevate a small group of business executives to demigod levels of control over people’s lives and data might have something to do with their higher levels of success. 🤔
@dougmerritt @nixCraft I don't think they're ahead, but the difference is small, and just like with operating systems, this is the effect of large AI parties sharing open models. (Which I think is good!)

@dougmerritt Deepseek’s paper from last month (DeepEncoder)?

Or is there another one you’re referencing? (i am curious to read if there are more)

@dotsie
Probably the same: Deepseek-OCR got improved results by inputing images of text rather than text, loosely speaking.

@nixCraft

Nvidia is one of the few companies actually making money with AI by selling real products.

I would bet that they have some plan for when the bubble pops but want to keep it going as long as possible, since sooner or later all that money will arrive at Nvidia to buy more GPUs...

@nixCraft Just buy more shovels 🤷‍♂️
#225 – Daniel Kokotajlo on what a hyperspeed robot economy might look like

Pocket Casts
@nixCraft In a gold rush, you sell shovels. And you advertise your shovels, and use any artificial means to prolong the gold rush.
@nixCraft i don't know If an dystopian autocratic regime with concentration Camps using AI for surveilance should be something you should compare yourself with. But i don't wear leather jackets and don''t bake cringe GPU videos in my kitchen
@nixCraft Seeing the USA is like, they seem like a collection of every bad scenario of the modern system.
I buy the whole "China is very close behind us" thing...
This doesnt mean the government has to help fund a bubble.

@dcre I agree. Investing in AI (which only benefits Nvidia) is nonsense.

But governments still need to do something about chips and long-term security in general.

Open and transparent grants, competition, not investments in individual companies (Intel)

ICYMI - OpenAI asks U.S. for loan guarantees to fund $1 trillion AI expansion

OpenAI is seeking U.S. government support to help finance what could become one of the largest infrastructure buildouts in corporate history — exceeding $1 trillion.

@nixCraft A Potemkin arms race.
@nixCraft If the AI bubble explodes and the economy tanks, is Jensen going to jail ? Don't think so.
@nixCraft He also said not that long before their chips were way behind. Clearly he changes discourse depending on the listener.

@nixCraft

Wait...

Trickle down economics for the "AI" sector?

Who'd have thought it? 🙄

@nixCraft Cue in Meja here. It's all about 💰💰 dum dum darara dum
@nixCraft china has long been ahead and I'm cheering for them. US is creating dataset generators to train good models on.
@nixCraft they just want to sell as much of their overpriced hardware before the AI bubble bursts.

@nixCraft The 1940's:
"We must develop the Nuclear Bomb before the nazis and Russians do, regardless of how harmful it is to the planet"

2025:
"We must develop AI before the Chinese do, regardless of the great harm it causes the planet"

@nixCraft I'm happy my Intel Ultra 9 285K desktop uses Intel graphics and not a Nvidia GPU.

I don't game, but back in 2011 Nvidia would've been a killer investment. Now it's a shitty one waiting to crash and burn everyone's life savings.

I'm a conservative dividend investor and even I dream of shorting NVDA when it all crashes (the likelihood of this happening is little-to-none however).
@nixCraft the same $5 bill being passed around and around.

@nixCraft @jikomayo Its astonishing to me how many people believe that there is an AI race that must be won.

Not only that, but that millions of graphics cards processing stupid chatbot prompts is the way to do it!

Attached: 1 image #nVidia boss Jensen Huang, talking to Gary O'Donoghue from the #BBC about the new #UK #AI #DataCentres When asked "You also need a lot of energy to run your technology, electricity is a lot more expensive in this country than in the US, this is going to mean burning more fossil fuels in the country, right?" Huang replies " We are going to need energy of all different kinds....." "You are going to have to burn gas, right?" He replies "You can use solar, you can use wind, you can use gas, and hopefully use also nuclear... and so EVERY FORM OF ENERGY SHOULD BE DEPLOYED TO HELP DRIVE THIS INDUSTRY" (emphasis mine) WTF. I guess if we still had coal-fired power stations you would use that too for this crap autocomplete? #ClimateCrisis #DataCenters

Yeah make it sound like it's a fucking horse race.

This perfectly fits the Make Amica… yelling and the Palantr praising on the latest GTC keynote in DC a week ago.
