advice to every Rust organizational decisionmaker out there: shut up, stop making excuses, and take notes from the PSF:

TLDR; The PSF has made the decision to put our community and our shared diversity, equity, and inclusion values ahead of seeking $1.5M in new revenue. Please read and share. https://pyfound.blogspot.com/2025/10/NSF-funding-statement.html 🧵 https://www.python.org/sponsors/application/

putting my money where my mouth is
@whitequark really starting to wonder about some of my language choices tbh
@dysfun I still want to harass the Palantir Guys in Rust enough that they quit :3
@whitequark Unfortunately the PSF is using PayPal and that is a no-go
@josyb @whitequark that is only one of several means for one to donate to the PSF, including money orders or cheque.
@draeath @whitequark Not everybody lives in the US :)
Sending a cheque over to the PSF would cut about $ 100 from the donation . An international money order would be an Odyssey.
I just wanted to stress that the PSF using PayPal is in contradiction with their letter seen PayPal's provenance/ownership.

@whitequark *me, expecting a days of the year compatible amount*:

What a weird amoun-- oooooh

@whitequark
Oh shit did their Donate page get hugged to death
@whitequark seems to have been temporary. Still kinda nice to realize everyone jumping in to help (even if it took down the site for a short while)
@whitequark Having a tough time lately and really questioning some life choices. Thanks for reminding me why I don't completely hate what I do.

@whitequark THANK YOU! I can't tell you how much seeing this support matters.

(And thank you for validating our choice to put powers of two as a donation amount.)

@lorenipsum I was going for 250 originally but 256 was very funny to me in the moment so I went for that
@whitequark we're here to support and amuse
@whitequark There may be things I don't like about Python as a language, but I really can't really say anything negative about the culture of the PSF.
A million and a half US to sell out their principles and they said no. Glad to see there are still good people out there.

I know a lot of folks will rightfully go donate to PSF, which is excellent.

But also please directly donate to under represented developers in our communities at large.

@whitequark tf. These bozos are really trying to dictate DEI in fucking programming languages?
@alex02 @whitequark they're doing it to everyone who wants a grant, literally all of them 💢
@draeath @whitequark that is fucking stupid. Guess we gotta be gayer to piss them off.
@whitequark ❓ What did happen with Rust?
@Genstar @whitequark Rust is popular with certain government contractors like companies which manufacture weapons and others which make surveillance systems. People from these companies have significant influence on where the language goes, and there’s concern they will pollute (or are already polluting) the developer culture around the language.
