Meanwhile, because Mastodon server admins are all cheapskates and we're not going to pay the sort of prices for hosting that AWS charge, the Fediverse keeps on chugging away happily while the corporate internet falls apart.

#AWS #AWSdown #Fediverse

@losttourist Well, parts of it. And that’s the point, isn’t it?

@losttourist

I'm in a consortium where we're running a gazillion services, mostly self-hosted and the rest with international companies but data storage in Europe and except for Zoom we have zero issues right now.

@losttourist wait for an outage at Hetzner…
@xgebi
@losttourist That was what I were going to say 😅
According to https://fediverse.observer/stats about a quarter of instances is hosted by Hetzner 😅
Fediverse Observer checks all sites in the fediverse and gives you an easy way to find a home from a map or list or automatically.

Fediverse Sites Status. Find a Fediverse server to sign up for, find one close to you!

@BentiGorlich @xgebi @losttourist there's also this article from Jan 2024 that claims the share is actually much larger but hidden by many of them being behind Cloudflare etc. Just hard to confirm since the real IP is not supposed to be exposed and they don't say how they managed to figure it out: https://blog.benjojo.co.uk/post/who-hosts-the-fediverse-instances
Where is all of the fediverse?

@losttourist I host my VPN on an EC2 instance in us-east-1 and apparently it wasn't affected. Waiting for the postmortem to explain what actually happened
@losttourist Liking this post from an instance running on a 20 year old recycled office PC in my attic.
@losttourist do you have any idea what those domain names cost?

@losttourist

The Fediverse is hosted by Hetzner...

(gross oversimplification, I know)

@losttourist Thousands of Mastodon instances run on masto.host, which uses French data centers OVH. So if OVH goes down instead of AWS, the result will be similar.
@michal @losttourist Same goes for Hetzner, especially for the German speaking part of the Fediverse 😄 It's a self-imposed risk because we're all so cheap and are doing this in our spare time, but I don't know if that makes it any better.

@michal @losttourist

Check out the service providers graph in https://fedidb.com/stats

No one provider has a majority of servers which is pretty good (don't know how that breaks down by active accounts per service provider though)

@losttourist Kind of like when NYC sent out a push notification about a tornado warning* and it came in on my flip phone fully five minutes before it arrived on my brother's smartphone.

* Yes, we occasionally have tornadoes. Usually an F0 or F1, and averaging one in the metropolitan area about every other year.

@losttourist It's the punk rock of social media platforms. 🤘
@losttourist Fedizens knitted their own servers from recycled Yarn...

@losttourist

So what is the affordable hosting that cheapskate Mastondon admins prefer?

Cheapness is very relatable.

@Phosphenes @losttourist Raspi in the basement I'd wager 😁
@losttourist There will be plenty of Fediverse administrators who have their stuff on AWS. Don't kid yourselves. But we can make the right decisions, away from BigTech and Co.
@losttourist I am fascinated by the story of the Ghost newsletter platform crowdfunding $300k and being proffitable a year later, while Substack still borrows other people's money by the tens of million without being sure how they will spend it
@losttourist That’s the real strength of the Fediverse — built by people, not corporations. 🌍
@losttourist My dad once siad I should use AWS because of "quality".

In reality, no-name VPS hosts (including what I run for a living) are often more reliable.

I've in fact gotten off the corporate internet for the most part:

* I canned my Reddit account weeks ago, and Twitter a year ago
* I self-host personal and business email
* I use @nextcloud for cloud storage on a NAS

I just miss DSLReports. Telecom provider subreddits suck in comparison.
