Maybe convincing friends and family to use #Signal and therefore #AWS for communication wasn’t the smartest move.

What's your favourite #decentralized alternative?

@Jonas The decentral alternatives are all equally bad when it comes to convenience and reliability. On both XMPP and Matrix there sometimes issues with encryption and it is never clear why that is.

Unless decentralized alternatives don't toughen up and get this kind of issues fixed I don't see anyone switching from Signal without a "tech background". 🤷

I like my decentral alternatives but they are not remotely close to #Signal (or even #Threema) when it comes to "ease of use".

@cryptgoat @Jonas i wish it wasn't true, but this has been true in my experience, too.

i've been concerned about signal's centralization and stance on this issue for years, but i have still found it to be the least bad option so far. it doesn't help that i use signal for calls with friends/family, too, as some popular alternatives don't support that at all.

@tmw keep an eye on #DeltaChat, it is super user friendly and easy to onboard family and video calls are coming! there is already prototypes version with call feature

@Jonas Asking myself the same question. Fast search brought me to: #matrix & #simplex

@Jonas #DeltaChat, it has super easy onboarding, easier than Signal: no phone number, no SMS codes, no solving CAPTCHAs just set a name and start chatting

it also has super nice multi-account and multi-device support, unlike Signal

@Jonas Self-hosted Matrix 😎
