Spoke to a scientist friend today and asked him about Trump’s anti-science campaign & his attacks on universities?

He replied, I don’t think Americans realize that even if we somehow stopped Trump now, he’s already set the USA back at least 20-30 years in scientific research. And given he still has 3 more years, we may not recover from this for half a century or more.

This Economist data is from 6 months ago. You can imagine how much worse it is now.😳

@QasimRashid I mentioned this to my therapist recently and she told me how there was some big psychology conference in the US that, in previous years, being a speaker at was considered to be the highlight of someone's career, but this year they kept sending out emails requesting speakers and they got *no* takers. Before Trump it was *the* event psychologists around the world wanted to attend and speak, since Trump, nobody wants to touch it. The brain drain is real.
@StarkRG @QasimRashid Way back in the 80s and 90s, Indiana University had to offer the sweetest retirement plan I have ever heard of, the 18/20 plan, to attract talent to the institution. Gov. Braun is annihilating that legacy now. And they will *never* spend the money necessary to build it back up again.
@StarkRG @QasimRashid from Amsterdam: same for the big conference on religious studies. Many of my colleagues went there every year. Now, only one will go. The others chose minor conferences in Canada or Europe.
@EvelineSulman @QasimRashid I have dual citizenship, one of which is American and the only way I'm setting foot there is if a family member is severely sick and probably won't make it. In fact, I may not even go in that case. Culturally-speaking, it's not a great place at the best of times, and this is far from the best of times. (I do miss the national parks and wilderness areas, though, but that's mostly because you're less likely to interact with people there)
@QasimRashid Some, perhaps many, Americans realized that in the hours after he was elected. Certainly by end of day on inauguration day.

@QasimRashid Qasim's friend got part of it a bit wrong: some of us certainly realized it months ago. Why risk your career by coming here when they might pull the rug out from under you based on the phase of the moon or whatnot?

Then you get people leaving. I'm going to recommend to my nephew that he makes sure his kids learn other languages in case they have to leave to get a job in whatever field they decide they'd like to work in.

@QasimRashid #Trump and #RussellVought think that's *progress*.
@BruceMirken @QasimRashid It is for them because they feel the exclusion from institutions which don't suffer fools.
@khleedril @QasimRashid Also, facts can get in the way of their agenda.
@QasimRashid As an Australian, I would just like to welcome any of those scientists πŸ‘

@johnoestmannmusic
I wrote to the local member, highlighting the fact America made great advances after taking in the scientific community after ww2.

Now Australia could pick up world class talent and profit from the state America has got itself into. We should be increasing funding and opening up positions to grab these people and their knowledge.

The letter I got back, came from the minister of immigration. We can't be picking favorites counties for visas, was the reply.

No vision.

Not that we treat our own researchers, academics and scientists better.

@QasimRashid

@QasimRashid Let's not use language such as "Now you extrapolate this in your mind!", this is classic fearmongering. Show us the numbers from now instead.
A fair amount of people have since lost their faith in him, in just six months.

@QasimRashid

In the #ThreeBodyProblem, the aliens prior to invading earth, stop human science, primarly basic research, prior to invasion...

...Has anyone tried to pull off the space-latex-skinsuit from the entity we know as tRump?

@n_dimension @QasimRashid I think there's something to that; at the start of Trump's first term I kept flashing back on the Men in Black scene where the alien peels off his skin suit and thinking "that's what's inside..."

Since day one of this term it's been clear to me that the damage to science, research, education, everything America has excelled at, will be incalculable, setting us back for far longer than Joe McCarthy managed with his wrecking ball.

@n_dimension
Such a good question!: β€œHas anyone tried to pull off the space-latex-skinsuit from the entity we know as tRump?”
I notice Putin has had new plumped up cheeks inserted again. Looks like the Ruzzian ones only last about a year. Or was that one of his many doubles? (β€œOnly his hairdresser knows for sure”, to quote a very old ad…)

@QasimRashid

@QasimRashid

Spoke to a friend, former VP R&D at a major pharma company, and he said the same thing. The dismantling of the entire government/industry drug approval process is something we will never recover from.

@mastodonmigration @QasimRashid

I said/posted months ago that the American Century ended on Jan 20, 2025 (if not on Debacle Day last November), though I admit I didn't yet grasp just how quick and widespread the damage would be.

@mastodonmigration @QasimRashid

"Does this mean that the U.S. is losing the race with China for global leadership? No, I think that race is essentially over. Even if Trump and his team of saboteurs lose power in 2028, everything I see says that by then America will have fallen so far behind that it’s unlikely that we will ever catch up."

Trump/MAGA say MERICA FIRST! but their actions are very much America last.

https://paulkrugman.substack.com/p/china-has-overtaken-america

China Has Overtaken America

And Trump’s policies guarantee that we will never catch up

Paul Krugman
@QasimRashid I always wondered why even have "small government", but the less government the less the very rich would have to pay taxes. They also get tax cuts. The trickle down never happens, instead the Evil Corp builds a space laser at some private islands to destroy the Moon and massacur excess labor with some Moonraker grade virus.
@QasimRashid I find it a bit baffling how everyone just seems to think he goes away in 3 years? What in Trump's actions so far has lead anyone to believe he'll allow a vote to happen?
@shockingly_bobo @QasimRashid Don't be surprised if some 'crisis' is concocted to ensure the mid-terms don't take place. Remember, Trump stated "Vote for me and you won't have to vote again".

@QasimRashid

I'm sorry, but Italy??

I have friends who attempted having a research career in Italy and all but one have dropped out. It's economically and mentally drainingb and institutional funding is at an all-time low.

I'm very skeptic Italy can really attract scientists in these conditions.

@QasimRashid Make America Great Again was always about Make America 1825 again.

#ProjectArmageddon

@QasimRashid
I assume there is no new data available for the US. How could that be?

@QasimRashid
My big wandering conference that rotates between institutes in Europe, Asia, and North America just opened up for hosting bids from the rest of the world for North America's turn in 2026. This is because none of the Canadians wanted to host, and there is a wide consensus that too many won't go to USA.

I will note that this is a community that is usually fine with going to China, there will be some that won't attend, but not nearly as toxic as USA under the Trump regime.

@QasimRashid What's Trump's anti-science campaign? Just not familiar with what you're referring to.
@ybroze @QasimRashid DOGE cancelling research projects, Trump cancelling university funds, cancelling of visas, excessive visa fees going forward etc.

@toriver @QasimRashid

Ah, I see. I'm not sure if those are strictly anti-science policies, really. The graph posted here is about web views in the sciences for non-US only; I'd be curious to see this for global views.

I'm rather in favor of reforming a lot of the funding pipelines, project selection, and visa process.

@ybroze @QasimRashid things like appointing an anti-vaxxer with less knowledge about healthcare as the average third grader for secretary of the health department, for example?

@cygnathreadbare @QasimRashid

I see. I never got the sense that RFK Jr. is against vaccinees in general, at least when he speaks about his views.

@ybroze @cygnathreadbare @QasimRashid watch what he does, not what he says.
@QasimRashid I notice that they've dropped 'Great' from Britain in that graphic, and I'm surprised that 'United' remains for the States.
@QasimRashid interesting choice of words by the Economist. I would have gone with "succeeding to repel" instead of "failing to attract"...
@QasimRashid lol at France not even charting
