Spoke to a scientist friend today and asked him about Trump’s anti-science campaign & his attacks on universities?

He replied, I don’t think Americans realize that even if we somehow stopped Trump now, he’s already set the USA back at least 20-30 years in scientific research. And given he still has 3 more years, we may not recover from this for half a century or more.

This Economist data is from 6 months ago. You can imagine how much worse it is now.😳

@QasimRashid I mentioned this to my therapist recently and she told me how there was some big psychology conference in the US that, in previous years, being a speaker at was considered to be the highlight of someone's career, but this year they kept sending out emails requesting speakers and they got *no* takers. Before Trump it was *the* event psychologists around the world wanted to attend and speak, since Trump, nobody wants to touch it. The brain drain is real.
@StarkRG @QasimRashid from Amsterdam: same for the big conference on religious studies. Many of my colleagues went there every year. Now, only one will go. The others chose minor conferences in Canada or Europe.
@EvelineSulman @QasimRashid I have dual citizenship, one of which is American and the only way I'm setting foot there is if a family member is severely sick and probably won't make it. In fact, I may not even go in that case. Culturally-speaking, it's not a great place at the best of times, and this is far from the best of times. (I do miss the national parks and wilderness areas, though, but that's mostly because you're less likely to interact with people there)
