Today I saw someone toot, in dismay, people are posting their everyday life to Mastodon when they could simply buy a diary for $1.99. I can't stop thinking about this.
What if this is all they have? What if they're isolated with or without people in their life? What if the only kind word they hear this week is, "That's cool"? I say, post your mundane. Post anything you want. While being silenced everywhere else, don't be silent here.
@LilPecan Jesus Christ, let people enjoy themselves. No one has to read the trivia of your life if they don't want to. But plenty of people get socialization they would not have otherwise. I write about myself. Absolutely no intention to stop either.
@fatsam I hope that Jesus Christ isn't directed at me. I agree with you and that's what I thought I stated. I apologize if I was unclear.
@LilPecan no no, you and I are on the same page.
@LilPecan and I apologize if I was unclear. "After you, Gaston."
@fatsam
Just to butt in at the top. Back when they didn't have mastodon, people did have to keep diaries. And people like Pepys recorded the boring minor crap (historically) and momentous events.
@LilPecan

@LilPecan

If that person thinks like that, social media may not be right for them (they should have asked their doctor).

If someone wanted to use it as their diary ... why would I or anyone else care?

@LilPecan When social media was invented it was about keeping up with family and making new friends.

Then people started promoting stuff they use to make a living and businesses started requiring that they and any of their "personalities" have a presence online. And they started LARPing their official personalities to sell TV shows, magazines, books.

People who came of age in that era forgot that there was a reason average people wanted to write. To be heard, to be seen, to see others.

@Urban_Hermit I was on Twitter when no one knew what it was. I was on MySpace before it was used for music promotion. I miss those days.
@LilPecan @Urban_Hermit I remember getting Microsoft Spaces and MySpace confused.

@LilPecan with me, feeds that are nothing but links to their substack or YouTube channel get likes but no boosts, at best. If you want to say it, say it here.

If someone links to an article that says a thing that is really important to them, great. If it is behind a pay wall, boosts will be removed.

I'm not here to buy a thing. I'm too poor for that anyway.

Say it, share the pictures. Get angry, or share joy. Make stupid jokes. Promote ideas you feel strongly about.

Be human, be friendly.

@Urban_Hermit @LilPecan

This is a good point. Why do people care so much when people post their thoughts, but have no problem with people posting paid promotions and corporations.

@Urban_Hermit @LilPecan that's why MySpace was the shit. I don't remember how their revenue stream worked...if they even had one. I don't remember seeing ads. I think they got some money for song plays on people's profiles. But I was friends with so many cool indie artists.
@LilPecan Oh no! How dare someone use their own little bit of social media as though it's their own little bit of social media!
I hope that tooter's socks make gagging noises as they put them on.
@LilPecan Wow. Sounds like they're stuck in 2007. ๐Ÿ™„
@wcbdata @LilPecan This is exactly what I used Twitter for back in 2007 and how I made friends
@LilPecan SM is 95% of my contact.
@Alison I'm sorry to hear that, unless it's on purpose and then I'm glad you have it. I love it here. I'm alone a lot (on purpose) and it's nice to visit my Internet people.
@LilPecan Iโ€™m asthmatic but also my mobility sucks. Dodging Covid is a big part. I work from home is another. The internet allows me to be in touch with my clients and volunteer cohort as well as friends.

@LilPecan I try to respond to those when I can. Goddess knows I've needed that little bump in knowing I still live, that I exist, that I matter.

The world is shitty and a little kindness goes a long way.

@LilPecan Me Me youre talking about shut in loonies like me!

Thank you for your attention to this weird person.

@Crystal_Fish_Caves LOONIES ARE MY PEOPLE!
@LilPecan I freaking LUV your profile name!๐Ÿ˜‚
@Crystal_Fish_Caves Thank you! I'm rather partial to it myself. ๐Ÿ˜
@Crystal_Fish_Caves @LilPecan absolutely same! as an immigrant SAHM, if I didnโ€™t have social media Iโ€™d have no grownup social interaction in my native language AT ALL. I absolutely love chatting with my friends about our days on social media - AND i have a diary too ๐Ÿ˜‰
@LilPecan I never understood people who complain like this. There is no algorithm, somehow you chose to be in this timeline. You fix the problem.
@LilPecan Personally, I enjoy those kinds of posts, itโ€™s a welcome relief to the โ€œall politics all the timeโ€ stuff elsewhere like on BlueSky. Posting about hobbies and such really sets this place apart
@LilPecan they're going to be really disappointed when they learn about the online replay loop of Samuel Pepys' Diary.
@LilPecan now I just need to find a stable server that supports long-form posts, so I can make an account to bring over all of my slice-of-life cat posts from Facebook and finally get off the hellsite.
@oddhack I hope you find what you're looking for! I got off FB very early and haven't missed it. It can be done and I believe you'll be happier for it.
@LilPecan no question there. Finally clicking the button on deleting my xitter account last year was a great relief. I suppose I'll have to keep FB around for Messenger contacts I don't have in other channels, though :-(
@oddhack Maybe save their details and open a Signal account? Haven't tried it yet but I hear that's an option.
@LilPecan Signal is great but few of my FB contacts use it. I'm not aware of any way to link Signal to Messenger but maybe I've missed something.
@oddhack Not sure I quit FB over a decade ago and let people know where they could find me.
@oddhack @LilPecan Someone back in the early 2000s converted The Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon to a blog format and it was amazing how much it sounded like any other college girl on social media of the time. Humans gonna human.
@LilPecan @xris What if some of us are so mundane that we actually like to hear it?
@LilPecan there is a certain level of entitlement that you need to be mad about how other people use platforms like this. Especially mastodon where you can simply block or filter them if you don't want to see their daily updates. Let people live and post how they want, if they don't like it the responsibility is on them to hide it, not others to self edit for their tastes.

@LilPecan

You've described my experience.

@TheEddieShow Keep being you, unfiltered and unapologetically! It's your show and no one can tell you what to do. (Although I kind of just did. ;))
@LilPecan right on! Some of my favorite follows are people who post about their plans or how their day went. I always admire their productivity (or relaxation!) and it does create a sense of community. Keep the daily diary posts coming!

@LilPecan

Also, the mute button is free. If someone doesn't want to hear about someone else's daily minutia, they have options other than complaining about it.

@LilPecan Mastodon scolds are the worst. You can't please them.
@not2b And you don't need to follow them either. ๐Ÿคช That's the beauty of it.
@LilPecan Hard agree! People can post what they like and if if someone out there doesn't want to read it they can simply *not*! It's so low-effort! the haters baffle me because they put so much effort into doing it wrong.

I figure that "journaling the mundane" is going to save future historians from many mysteries such as "Where the heck was Punt?" :)
@LilPecan the hell, I have a diary too, but I'm not sure it has the tolerance level for trauma dumping that fedi has ;)
@LilPecan This! Also, a diary for $1.99? In this economy?!
