@nixCraft It's like which deadly illness you want to stop first …
@nixCraft already banned any
@nixCraft What is a "personal desktop app" in this context?
@the_moep something that you installed on your PC/laptop at home (not related to work stuff) because it was once a good app and you got some value out of it, but now grew worse over time due to bloat, slop/AI, ads, or predatory practices etc.
@nixCraft @the_moep do you know how little that narrows things down?

@anthropy I've liked this and I've shared this. What else can I do? (post quotes aren't in my client yet)

@anthropy @nixCraft I use some Free software made by a company and then Microsoft comes along and buys the company. #atomeditor 🤬
@nixCraft I'd choose Adobe and Microsoft, but as an admin in a predominantly Windows environment, the latter would turn out to be quite difficult.
@nixCraft can't abandon what I don't use.
@nixCraft I hate outlook desktop app.
@nixCraft all of the above. I have hated working with Adobe products for years, especially their PDF reader, and their recent changes haven't improved that.
Microsoft's constant push to put Copilot into everything and forcing a hardware upgrade to use latest OS and the constant ads! I only have Windows installed for my tax software.
Apple, only used their stuff in school in the 80's. Now it seems they are tyrants about their eco system.
@nixCraft I haven't had to deal with bad desktop apps in a decade or more, so if anything I'm nostalgic for them. Only bad piece of software I have to use professionally is the Workday web app
@nixCraft
I can not abandon that which I do not use. So none of the above 🤠
@nixCraft I put other but guess the biggest thing I did was block Apple's DoH. I configured my own DNS server (Firewalla Purple) to handle all my home DNS calls. MacOS insists on using their own DoH servers so I blocked all of them. Had to do the same thing with FF.
@nixCraft already abandoned all of those on desktop, and never going back.

@piepants @nixCraft

Adobe was first, the other two are being phased out.

@nixCraft

I've already abandoned them all.

@nixCraft Never used Apple nor Adobe so MS it is.
@nixCraft @dgar Voted other because I've already thrown those all in the bin.
@nixCraft got laid off this month. For the first time since around 1998, I don't have to look at Outlook!! I feel blessed
@nixCraft
Adobe ✅
Microsoft ✅
Apple - devices are not at the retirement point yet
@nixCraft I'm already not touching anything Apple, Adobe still has me with Photoshop although I've been trying to use Gimp whenever possible. And Microsoft, sadly I'm still stuck with it, but using it much less nowadays since I have less time for gaming.
@nixCraft I would say Adobe if I had to use that. But I don’t. So I chose MS.
@nixCraft MS Windows, it's horrible, but I'm a gamer so... Adobe Photoshop is still pretty awesome. I'm using it for so many years now and I can't find something comparable to it. Plus Adobe After Effects and Media Encoder.

@nixCraft

I have saved some of these things on an old offline computer in case I miss them. Which rarely happens.

The rest has now completely moved to Linux-biotop.

@nixCraft I’ve been all open source all the way for over 10 years now, so in my case it’s “none of the above”.
@nixCraft
I don't need or use any "desktop app" from Adobe/Microsoft/Apple
@nixCraft Ditched the Adobe tax some years ago. Only have a piggy-back MS account because someone else has a spare seat on their licence, but use it as little as possible. Never used Apple much and am working on ditching Google's offerings where I can

@eaterofsnacks Two of the few things I would find very sad to have to live without are google maps/streetview and Wikipedia. Literally two websites I use daily and with great pleasure.
Like you I abandoned Adobe long ago, only ever used MS at work. Have never used anything by Meta.

@nixCraft

@LillyHerself @nixCraft With you on those two sites. I use both at once when I'm "browsing" French towns in search of somewhere to move to one day. I just love taking little virtual tours.
@eaterofsnacks @nixCraft The weird thing is when you actually visit a place you have zoomed around in Streetview.
It's like deja vu!
I had the strange experience of directing someone around a town I was visiting for the first time, with scary accuracy.
The other weird thing is making discoveries about somewhere you lived for years, because of being able to see it from above, and in a much richer way than just from a map.
@eaterofsnacks @nixCraft The sad thing about using it to scope a potential place to move to, is that it can be 10 years out of date for smaller places, and profoundly inaccurate as a result.
@LillyHerself @nixCraft Yes, good point. There's usually a huge mismatch between the places you can see in a town centre and what's still in business. And if anywhere has been on a development splurge -- a bit like where I live now -- half the surrounding countryside might have vanished too.
@LillyHerself @nixCraft Exactly! There's an element of Uncanny Valley about that kind of experience
@nixCraft Apple and only got Apple Music when at time, phone I have support Dolby Atmos which now I have a Google Pixel, its kinda pointless.

@nixCraft yall still use any of those?

for me the only really proprietary stuff i use on the desktop is steam and vmware (ill switch from vmware as time goes on, ill get qemu worked out in my own time), i already ditched the desktop app for discord and use that only in my browser, i do use vscode sometimes but i could replace that with vscodium and probably will,

@nixCraft

I don't really use proprietary programs, but if there was a full autodesk suite that was libre, I'd spend the time to learn it. It isn't essential for my work, but it would some things much easier. As it is, I just do without.

@nixCraft haha this was a hard one. I would say Adobe gets me the most furious especially with absurd prices but windows in general is a spyware company (my opinion) and tracks everything about you to drown you in advertisements
@nixCraft If it weren't for SolidWorks, I would have already switched from Windows back to Fedora with Gnome. But until a decent OSS alternative appears or an equivalent to Parallels is developed for Linux, I'm stuck with it. At least there's WSL, otherwise I would have completely lost my mind.

@nixCraft

I've abandoned Microsoft and Adobe and never used Apple

@nixCraft can't I instead abandon all PWAs?!
@nixCraft Have to use loathsome Microsoft for uni. Wish they would switch to Linux.
@nixCraft At home I’ve mostly dropped them, but work is still Adobe-dependent. I have a work-issued Macbook because otherwise they’d give me a cheap-ass Dell pos.
Discord. It's just a bloated Electron app that eats RAM for breakfast.

@nixCraft the only apple thing i use is cups and the only microsoft thing i use is teams (reluctantly)

as far as i know at least

@nixCraft
alphabet inc is missing.

usually known as google, youtube, gmail, google play, chrome and so on.

@nixCraft I don;t use any of the above and so cannot abandon them.

I could have checked Android/Google if it was an option. I don;t feel like I own my phone. I paid for the H/W but don;t control the S/W. (Using Linux on my PCs.)

@nixCraft Wish I could drop Adobe, but there is nothing to match lightroom unfortunately 😞
(No, Darktable is light years away from the UX of Lightroom)
