Ryan Walters resigns as Oklahoma schools chief to lead conservative group

Oklahoma's top public schools official, Ryan Walters, says he's resigning to lead a conservative educators' group. Walters, who praised Donald Trump and opposed "wokeness" in schools, announced his decision Wednesday on Fox News. He plans to become CEO of the Teacher Freedom Alliance, a nonprofit supporting educators in developing "free, moral, and upright American citizens." Walters has been involved in several controversial initiatives, including promoting religion in classrooms and requiring teachers to pass ideology exams. On Tuesday, he pledged to put a Turning Point USA chapter in Oklahoma high schools to honor founder Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated on Sept. 10.

Walters, 40, said Wednesday night on FauxNews that he is stepping down as state superintendent of public instruction to become the CEO of the Teacher Freedom Alliance, a nonprofit that says it assists educators “in their mission to develop free, moral, & upright American citizens.”

“We’re going to destroy the #TeachersUnions,” Walters said on Fox. “We have seen the #teachers #unions use money & power to corrupt our schools, to undermine our #schools.”

He has also tried to require #SocialStudies teachers to promote #conspiracies about the 2020 election, track the #immigration status of #children in #schools & require applicants for teacher jobs coming from #California & #NewYork to pass an exam designed to safeguard what he described as “radical leftist ideology.”

Many of his efforts have led to lawsuits against him & the agency, even as #Oklahoma’s national ranking in several #education metrics has continued to decline.

Walters, a former teacher, was elected to the superintendent’s job. He had served as Oklahoma Secretary of #Education from September 2020 to April 2023. He was appointed to that position by Governor #KevinStitt.

Ever since then, “we have witnessed a stream of never-ending scandal & political drama,” #Oklahoma Attorney General Genter Drummond said in a statement.

A key point here is that Walters probably could have survived anything if his fellow Republicans had his back. Instead, they eventually got so fed up with his bullshit that they weren't willing to protect him anymore. So there is some level of incompetence and scandal that will eventually turn off even people pretty far to the right.

@Nonilex he was also involved in a massive scandal with tons of baseless accusations up and down the chain of command over what ultimately turned out to be a simple error in TV control because a scene of a movie containing nudity played on a TV during a school board meeting and instead of simply turning it off everyone had to point fingers
