The film "Hackers" was released 30 years ago today.

It doesn't have the best plot in some respects, but I love the music, the aesthetic, and the characters' sheer enjoyment of their computers and the net.

One of my favourite films :)

#HackThePlanet

@neil it also has a fantastic soundtrack :)
@neil But it has the Gibson Neil, THE GIBSON!
@neil Now just double checking my spelling on that has made me realise that I don't want to be on the Internet any more.
@neil the net is still exciting

@neil

There is a new release coming shortly on physical media:

The soundtrack is fairly epic and so representative of that era. The plot is if course very silly but great fun 🙂

@neil I can't believe we've never watched it. Must see if we can track it down.
@neil also i like the costumes.

(WOAH 32K modem?)
@neil Made me wonder what other movies Iain Softley directed.
And I think the only other one is K-Pax, very different movie but also pretty nice.
@neil the inline skating is also a bit ropey, IMO. But otherwise a fun film
@neil That leather jacket… Still gorgeous.

@neil The title scene where the bird's-eye view of the city transforms into a circuit board while Orbital plays in the background is the coolest shit

I saw someone toot that hackers in the 90s definitely didn't look like that, but hackers nowadays definitely do

@neil it might just be a function of my age but I find 90s tech optimism/utopianism to be a GORGEOUS aesthetic.

@neil @onepict in some way the bad guy in it isn't bad enough.

Re-assessing the movie Freejack as being much more accurate 😂

@tanepiper @neil I haven't seen Freejack.
@onepict @neil then I won't spoil it but highly recommended for a 90's B-Movie night

It kind of influenced us as well :)

@neil stil watching that movie about once a year.
It has something catchy to it.

@neil

It can't be 30 years already!

@neil I mean it's good, but it's no Sneakers
@ahnlak @neil Both films are good in their own way, but the cinematography of Sneakers is magical and it will be many years until a film has a cast list that amazing.

@plwt @neil it's an incredible cast that looks absurd on paper. I mean what kind of lunatic puts such wildly different talent together and expects it to work?!

(see also Ocean's Eleven, in both classic and modern form...)

@neil At least 25% of my enjoyment of that film is due to Matthew Lillard's hilarious performance!

@neil Great movie, also the reason I botched my wedding vows.

I have a good memory of scenes but a tendency to recall them when something reminds me of them.

During our wedding, the pastor was quoting Corinthians (when I was a child...) so I started replaying the scene with Cereal Killer saying that.

I got interrupted reliving the scene with my spouse-to-be poking me. Embarrassed I managed to get a "I-I do?"

Fortunately, it worked out and we're still together after twenty five years.

@neil Have you seen this cybersecurity film list before? Some greats in there!

@sundew @neil For some reason I was suprised to see Office Space on there, but if course it should be on there!

@sundew
Great list! Thank you.🙏🏻

@neil

@sundew @neil while they seem to have listed anything even tangentially mentioning computers this century, they missed one with a classic cyberspace scene from 1991: Until The End of The World. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKhzsx2gVgM (it may look a bit retro-future daft, but it was 2 years before the first graphical web browser, and 6 before google)

@neil
I agree with this, well said. The plot was there to carry the rest of it, it doesn't have to be exceptional in every category.

@neil I frequently say when the topic comes up Sneakers Is a better movie about how hacking actually works, but Hackers Is great for the aesthetic, the themes, and the punk culture.

Plus, it has one of the absolute best depictions of flow state I've ever seen in film.

@neil RISC architecture is gonna change everything.
@neil The Net came out around the same time. Also, my coworker was fired for hacking the HR database to look up salaries, coincidentally while an IT manager was watching.
@neil
Wow, 30 years. I guess The Plague has fully served his very boring sentence and can have fun again!
@neil Great film! I’ve just got back from New York and it brought back so many memories of that film. I ended up watching it yesterday.

@neil

I loved that movie, but I was always frustrated that [Ramon?] was arrested or something about 3/4 of the way in, & the story just abandons him after that & we never find out what his fate was. (It's been a while since I've seen it, but I was upset by that again on my last rewatch.)

@neil @TheBreadmonkey I still love the floating math symbols/expressions spinning around them as they hack. It’s so silly and ridiculous but no more so than most more modern hacking in movies.

@mwyman @neil

This is me whenever I'm creating a trojan worm to drop into a trap door in the mainframe

@mwyman @neil

Also fifty thousand watts is FAR TOO MANY WATTS for funking

@neil

Sneakers is the best hacker movie.

Hackers is the best hackers movie.

@neil There are a couple of crazy things here. One, that it was 30 years ago. Two, when Hackers came out, 30 years ago meant 1965, which at the time felt like ancient history to me. I assume kids these days feel that way about 1995?
@neil the ninetiest of movies
