Well fuck. I am now old enough to graduate from needing one set of glasses to needing two different sets of glasses. I will fucking punch Father Time in the goddamn face once I figure out which pair is most appropriate for the attack range. Or maybe I need a quickswap slot.
First pair was for phones or books or cooking instructions. But desktop monitors were fine for about 5 years. But now... yeah, I need a new pair specifically for that. Fortunately naked distance vision for racing is still fine. So far.
@TomF I feel this. I used to be fine with one pair of glasses for distance, now I need reading glasses as well. I'm bordering on needing monitor-distance glasses but am resisting, it's the one range that my eyes still mostly work at. I tried varifocals in the interests of cutting down the combinations but I absolutely hated them, mainly because the useful aperture you get for a given distance is pitiful. Getting older sucks
@sinbad @TomF I went out for the day yesterday with 3 pairs of glasses. My distance sunglasses for driving in daylight, distance "normal" glasses for driving in the night, and my reading glasses for anything close up.
@KeefJudge @TomF I feel like this could be a genuine modern day use for a bandolier

@sinbad @TomF Being diabetic makes it fun. My vision used to change between very near sighted and very far sighted (and anywhere between) every couple of weeks depending on what I'd been eating.

Right now I'm near sighted in one eye and far sighted in the other, so my eye dominance changes based on distance. :)

@sinbad @TomF 100% relatable. Varifocals are ass.
wtf happened to the future where I was supposed to get robot eyes? 😢
@darbotron @sinbad Quest 3 in passthrough mode!
@TomF unfortunately I’ve been a two glasses person for a year or two now. I also hate shopping, so when it comes to buying new glasses I barely have the energy to choose one type - so I end up with two sets of glasses with different lenses that look exactly the same. And now I have something else to moan about, since I often put the wrong glasses on and slowly think my eyesight is degrading badly.
@MouseByTheSea I did fortunately think of that! Picked two quite different styles.
@TomF I had to put a small mark on one pair… but next time I’ll force myself to choose different frames. If only they did all their frames in different colours, find one that fits, choose two colours, get out of there fast.
@MouseByTheSea A bit of masking tape on the earpiece should do the trick. Of course, then you need to read what's on the masking tape, and for that you need your gla... oh.
@TomF I am a very lucky person, one of the frames broke so I glued and sticky taped it back together, now it sticks out a mile so there is no confusion.

@TomF I have three pairs. The ones I use most of the time are multifocals. If I'm reading a book I use reading glasses. The third I rarely use, but it's a backup if the multifocals break or something.

When I got the reading glasses I read a whole pile of books right away. Was surprised how much I missed reading books.

@sol_hsa I have a set of multifocals, and they're genuinely great for general life - modern technology is amazing - but for reading monitors they drive me nuts because of course at any one time, 2/3rds of the screen is not in focus. So I really need a dedicated pair for Being On The Computer.

@TomF phone and computer have never been a problem for some reason... reading paper books made my eyes tired really quickly (as did some visual novels for some reason!)

company would reimburse (part of) "computer use glasses" for me, but I haven't felt the need.

@TomF One pair to locate your fist, one to locate his face, rapid switching for the aiming and throwing, second one for enjoying the impact.
@androcat @TomF Doom: The Sharp Ages
@lritter @androcat "These kids wanting 4k displays they all look the same as 640x480 to me" <puts on glasses> "Oh shit!"
@TomF multifocal?
@oblomov I have multifocals. Great for daily use, but they annoy the shit out of me for a monitor, because at any one time, 2/3rds of the screen is blurry. I am using them right now - bleuch.
@TomF we need to invent a new kind of lens that is both multifocal and uniform.
