Shrinkflation Upsets Grannies

"Baking is indeed a science that needs precise measurements and consistency. Many home bakers, like Judith, find it disheartening to see decades-old cherished recipes forever changed by corporate decisions..."

The 70-Year-Old Beloved Boxed Mix Grandmas Won’t Be Buying Anymore

"It's just so upsetting."

I hate shrinkflation but I never understood the fascination with ‘recipes’ that were hacks of box mixes, jello pudding mix and cool whip. If one’s going to the trouble of baking, why the mixes?

My mum’s family didn’t consider that baking so I never learned recipes like that. But if you go on old recipe boards or look at community cookbooks from the 1950s to 2000s, they’re full of ‘3 or 4 ingredient’ recipes like that.

Given that I eventually had to learn to bake gluten-free, including making up DIY GF all purpose flour with more than a half-dozen ingredients, I’m grateful for the scratch-bake insistence from early childhood.

@AlsoPaisleyCat

I'm the same. My grandmother taught me how to bake everything from yeast breads, cookies, pies etc...nothing from a box. For my children, I baked everything from scratch, still do for myself.. (Today I baked two loaves of besan/oat/sorghum flour soda bread--I'm gluten free too).

I suppose though many folk like (??!) boxed cake?

@SnowyCA The Vanguard Group own the most shares, and have the biggest seat at the corporate table of General Mills, who own Crocker. Then it is Black Rock and State Street Global Advisors. They want as much return as possible. Screw grandma.

@paul
I wasn't aware of the connections--thanks for the info, Paul. : )

"They want as much return as possible. Screw grandma."

Yes, that's what's so aggravating, even food is profit over people!

@SnowyCA 86% of the company is owned by institutional investors, even though it is a public company. Those people pull the strings. They want return on investment, not stable brand, a good product and happy customers.

@paul

Companies always think only of the investors, and board members their bonuses.

Too few corporations own most food manufacturing in the world.
