I hate shrinkflation but I never understood the fascination with ‘recipes’ that were hacks of box mixes, jello pudding mix and cool whip. If one’s going to the trouble of baking, why the mixes?

My mum’s family didn’t consider that baking so I never learned recipes like that. But if you go on old recipe boards or look at community cookbooks from the 1950s to 2000s, they’re full of ‘3 or 4 ingredient’ recipes like that.

Given that I eventually had to learn to bake gluten-free, including making up DIY GF all purpose flour with more than a half-dozen ingredients, I’m grateful for the scratch-bake insistence from early childhood.

I'm the same. My grandmother taught me how to bake everything from yeast breads, cookies, pies etc...nothing from a box. For my children, I baked everything from scratch, still do for myself.. (Today I baked two loaves of besan/oat/sorghum flour soda bread--I'm gluten free too).

I suppose though many folk like (??!) boxed cake?
