Q1: Who are you, and tell us about something making related thing that you have been given?
A1: It is I, Andy. One of my neighbours gave me some woodwork books after her husband died. I offered her some money for them but she refused.
@Andy @MakersHour
I have so many woodwork books now, many of them I converted into library books for the community workshop.
I'm Sue, and a very useful thing I was given, by @Maker_of_Things, was my tiny quilter's iron. I've used it a lot on tiny sewing even before I got into patchwork. Perfect for pressing tiny seams. #MakersHour
@Indigoatcrafts @MakersHour @Maker_of_Things
It's a nifty little thing, and I can keep it in my sewing box, with a bit of thick cloth as a surface, to save getting the big iron out for small stuff.
@suearcher @MakersHour @Maker_of_Things
Oh my goodness, today I learned that "tiny quilter's iron" is a thing.
@jmeowmeow @MakersHour @Maker_of_Things
Very useful for pressing little seams and getting into tight spaces.
@wokstation @MakersHour
I hope you still get a chance to play with molten metal.
@wokstation @MakersHour
I haven't used my Lidl plasma cutter for a while. I need new consumables, but haven't found any that fit, yet.
@MakersHour A1) Todd here again. Our eldest gave me an LED desk lamp that they made in DT. It has a small concrete base, articulated copper tube, and a plastic lamp shade. USB powered. It works particularly well for that little bit of extra light for Teams meetings for work.
That sounds very useful!
@MakersHour A1 Hello #MakersHour, Kevin here.
I was given a non-functional DX100 synth by @cymplecy around a year+ ago. Despite three blog posts describing what I've tried, I've still not got it working yet.
It is not considered tactful to mention the neat (working) ROM-based PT-50 that @Maker_of_Things sent me much longer ago that I've not really done much with.
But I've thought about it and read about it quite a lot :)
@diyelectromusic @MakersHour @cymplecy
You'll get around to them in due course.
That sounds cute!
Oh, I bet they'll be nice and cosy!
Absolutely right - it's the intangible things like support that are the most valuable!
Q1. Who are you and what's a favorite making related thing that I have been given?
A1. Jeff M, US rain shadow saltwater coast of the Cascadia bioregion (hello non-exceptional Douglas fir trees!).
A good friend of many years' standing (and she stands rather tall, at that) gave me a carob-wood handled seam ripper especially made for me. The point reverses into the handle for safe stowage.
@jmeowmeow @MakersHour
Oh, that is a lovely gift!
That's lovely!
@MakersHour Curiously I rarely use the seam ripper since I do more embroidery than piecing or assembly, but it is still dear to me.
Many objects hold a reminder of the person who gave them to me: Frannie's hand crank coffee grinder, Aunt Susan's Turkish coffee pot. For a long while it was Dad's old bicycle until I bought my own, not many years ago.
@MakersHour #MakersHour Q1: making-related gift
A1: I was given a pair of pliers as a gift from a relative in Germany - I think when I was 12 or so (already making things with LEDs at that point). I still use them - as recently as two weeks ago - they are my favorite pliers. I wish the branding hadn't worn off - I might buy more from whoever made them.
(The pen in the photo was also a gift from the same relative)
@tschundler @MakersHour
Those do look like nice pliers!
A1 hi. I'm Quixoticgeek a maker in the Netherlands. One of the making related things I've used a lot over the last couple of decades is a pair of jewellers pliers that came from my father. I'm not sure if I was given them, or just... Rehomed them... But I use them a lot. They are great for when you don't want to mark soft materials.
I also have a large wooden jointer plane a fellow maker I met via an online forum gave me. I've yet to use it fully tho.
