I'm writing this post here today in hopes to bring some attention to something that is near and dear to my heart, and that's an update to the current situation with Nova Launcher, that I worked for and with for nine years up until August of 2024.

For those that haven't seen the news, Kevin Barry, the founder and developer of Nova has left Branch which in turn means he's now no longer involved with Nova Launcher in any way going forward.

https://teslacoilapps.com/nova/solong.html

For the past year or so Kevin has stated that he was working on the open source version of Nova Launcher so that if/when this time came, it would be out in the open and the community could take it over and contribute to it and have it continue being developed.

However, it seems that Harish Thimmappa and others at Branch had told him to stop working on that effort as they didn't want him to continue doing that for unknown reasons. This is sad news because this was something that former CEO, Alex Austin, had promised both via a contract and publicly that if Kevin were to ever leave Branch, Nova Launcher would become open source. You can find that quote here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/w2q6al/comment/igzoniu/

and another very similar quote with similar conversation here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/w2q6al/comment/ih25ntz/

The reason for this post is to try and draw some attention to the folks at Branch, specifically folks like Harish Thimmappa to do the right thing and honor these promises and any writings in the contracts from 2022 and to fully focus on releasing Nova Launcher as an open source app.

The community deserves this more than anything, since that was something that Kevin was very adamant about when he allowed Branch to acquire Nova Launcher back in 2022. Plus, this is just something that Branch should do since it is something that has been promised.

There is currently a petition on Change.org to try and get Branch to do this as well. After only 3 days of it being posted to Change.org, it sits at almost 1,500 signatures, and that's with very little to no press coverage at this time, which is something that would be super useful to bring full attention to this situation. You can find the petition here:

https://www.change.org/p/make-nova-launcher-open-source-let-the-community-continue-its-development

I ask that everyone who sees this post can share it with their followers as I would love to see Branch do the right thing and follow through with their promises that were made back in 2022 when they acquired Nova Launcher and release it fully as an open source app now that Kevin is no longer working for Branch and not involved in Nova Launcher.

I'm going to tag some folks below that I worked with at Branch in hopes of getting this post seen by as many folks there as possible.

@cliffwade I really hope that this somehow goes through. Because I haven't found a launcher that actually replaces Nova for me. Nova's a bit buggy for me right now but even then I prefer using it over other launchers

@thibaultmol I hope it does as well. We just need the community to get fully behind it and really get to Branch and make it happen.

Have you tried Smart Launcher? It's really top tier, the developers are in our Discord(what used to be the official Nova Discord), very active and have added quite a few things from Nova that users have asked about since we all got laid off last year.

@cliffwade I'll check it out when I have time. (stupid excuse, I know, but yeah)

My main things that I like Nova for:
- slide to the left to get the app tray and instantly start search
- ability to have folder specific behavior (some I have one-click to open app but slide to open folder. Some the opposite)
- Ability to set a widget as a homescreen persistent one at the bottom (say you have a search widget, that it doesn't stick to a specific homescreen panel but is locked to the screen)

@thibaultmol All three great features that Nova had that no other launcher really seemed to have, or maybe only have one of at the most.

@cliffwade yep exactly 😭

I'm not saying the other launchers (and maybe smart launcher) aren't great... but like... this setup worked for me. All of it is in musclememory. I can operate my homescreen with my eyes closed.

If Nova became open source, with then an actual proper open source project ... that would be insanely cool

@thibaultmol I hear you. My setup was the basically the same the entire 9 years I worked for Nova. Like you said, it was just muscle memory and it worked very well for me.

I certainly hope open sourcing of Nova happens. It's something I'm definitely pushing for, big time.

@thibaultmol @cliffwade , I've tried dozens of other launchers, most don't even come close.
All your examples plus ie.: gestures with screen off - a circle opens my camera, and nothing else.

@Antigrav @cliffwade I'm not sure about that thing with the gestures you're saying. But Smart Launcher is the closest I've gotten and what Nova people (including @cliffwade iirc) also recommend.

Plus they have a nova config import now (in testing)

@thibaultmol @cliffwade , ah, sorry, my mistake.
They're 'screen off' gestures of my
One-plus phone.
@cliffwade I really hope this gets somewhere. I've been using Nova since 2013. I've tried others but there always missing that one little thing to make me jump ship.

@UKFilmNerd Let's hope! We just need the community to share it far and wide!

Have you tried Smart Launcher? The developers are in our Discord(formerly the official Nova Discord) and are very active and have added quite a few things by request from Nova.

Nova Launcher’s open source release blocked by its owners, despite contractual obligations – OSnews

@thomholwerda THANK YOU! I truly do appreciate you writing about this and bringing attention to the community!
@cliffwade yo, just signed it. we really need nova back. it was the most custimisable and even then everything was functional with talkback

@Aryan Thank you so much!

I would highly recommend speaking to the Smart Launcher devs in our Discord to see if they can work with you possibly on getting Talkback to work as well with their launcher as we had it in Nova. I'm sure it would be useful to a lot of other users.

@cliffwade I'll probably do it after I have enough money to buy the full version of Smart launcher so that I can test everything
@cliffwade Thanks Cliff. It's really lame of them. I don't understand why they wanted to buy the software in the first place if they were just going to let it die. I've been using it for at least 10 years now
@PhilGastwirth At the time it was acquired, Alex had all the plans in the world to do something with it and did while he was there. It was once he was run out of the company that the focus shifted.

@cliffwade Your name got dropped on slashdot! (I know /. is not as popular as it used to be but is still nice):

Nova Launcher's Founder and Sole Developer Has Left - Slashdot

Kevin Barry, founder and sole developer of Nova Launcher, has left parent company Branch Metrics after being told to stop work on both the launcher and an open-source release. While the app remains on Google Play, the launcher's website currently shows a 404 error. The Verge reports: Mobile analyti...

@nekoplanet Oh, very neat to see. Definitely not what it used to be, but nice to see I made it there.
@cliffwade Nova has been my launcher for over a decade. Hard to find a replacement but ever since Branch entered the equation I found an alternative called Pear Launcher which is the most similar alternative I've found... But I miss Nova.
@eclecticpassions Pear Launcher is interesting and one that most people don't seem to know about.
@cliffwade Yes, it's not mentioned much. I discovered it after testing many launchers!
@eclecticpassions Also, thank you for your support in using the app for so long. I greatly appreciate you doing so as it means the world to me!
@cliffwade Thank you, and the original Nova team, for making the best launcher. It is always the first thing I install on all Android devices. Love your blog btw!

@eclecticpassions Thank you thank you! I really do appreciate the kind words and thank you for supporting the app at any time over the years. That truly means the world to me, even after not working there for over a year now.

Aww, thanks! I saw the colors and such and knew I had to make that my theme. I really should post more often though.

@eclecticpassions Trying out Pear Launcher - it looks really good but I can't figure out how to have more than one page on my desktop
@max_headroom Just drag an app icon near the edge to start a new page.
@cliffwade that launcher is still a thing? I used it in like 2011 or 2012 on android 2.2, and then never again

@cliffwade
Hmm, that's a dick move.

I assume they want to make money off of it.

@cliffwade I share your view. I use Nova Launcher since idk 10 years? and started to pay for it too because it's so bullshit-free.

It's sad to read this at the same time. You have my back.

I sincerely hope this route doesn't lead to enshittification...

@cliffwade that being said, the post could have been a bit more crisp as long posts tend to be scrolled away because long.
@cliffwade Once novalauncher kind of started getting corporate, I ended up switching to Unlauncher...
@kazriko The cool thing about Nova was, it never got "corporate" until Kevin left two weeks ago. It literally took Kevin to leave the company and the launcher for it to become "corporate" as you say.
@cliffwade Well, whenever something gets bought up, there's always the concern that the corporations will start to sneak stuff in. I started looking for alternatives at least when it was bought.
@kazriko That's often true, but like I said, Nova never got anything inputted from Branch and that is a statement that still holds true to this very minute.
