@postmarketOS "Distributions available on the Pinephone" on the Pine64 wiki back when that thing was new (which was always intended as a Linux device)

(my Pinephone has since become very unused)

@postmarketOS Wish I remembered what I was doing in 2018. I was there in the very beginning, when it was just starting as "Alpine for phones"
@elly @postmarketOS oh yes this here is the person which likely made me aware of pmos :3
@postmarketOS
I might have been looking for fun new things to do with the N900, or been around people (irl and on socials) who had such inclinations... I remember my first install being the N900, though, about 7 years back.
@postmarketOS For me it was this https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=14427232, IIRC. (If not, it was a r/Linux post about just that announcement in RedReader (https://github.com/QuantumBadger/RedReader))
PostmarketOS: Aiming for a 10 year life-cycle for smartphones | Hacker News

@linmob @postmarketOS I remember seeing that /r/linux post and being like "heh, love the enthusiasm and appreciate the effort. Such a shame that it'll go to waste, these kinds of projects always fizzle out."

So happy to have been proven wrong.

@postmarketOS
Pine64 blog post IIRC,
Could have also been on the Pine64 forums or wiki, but I think I was only on those later.

@postmarketOS

From the #pinephone after being a lil disappointed in ubports approach... Not saying it's bad, just wasn't for me ... And the #sxmo project

@postmarketOS Most likely some kind of tech blog yeah. I know I was getting sick of OEM Android and was considering my options, and around that time I would have uncovered Linux Mobile distros in general.
@postmarketOS I think I was reading a blog/scuttlebutt post by @xjix that mentioned it as a possible base for a nomad device.
@postmarketOS I think it was a blog post, maybe OMG! Ubuntu, but the articles there mentioning postmarketOS only go to 2019 so it must've been somewhere else. I can't remember anymore, that was the fall of 2017 when I was in college (I dropped out).
@postmarketOS I first heard about postmarketOS when I first got the PinePhone postmarketOS Community Edition!
@postmarketOS I found out about postmarketOS when I was looking for other operating systems to install on my KaiOS feature phone :D
@postmarketOS There should be another option #pinephone
@postmarketOS "No" should also be an option, right?

@postmarketOS
> How did you learn about postmarketOS?

I honestly can't remember. Most likely either here or through random web searches for things like 'Android alternatives' or 'mobile GNU'. Why do you ask?

@postmarketOS I'm pretty sure I first heard about Postmarket somewhere on YouTube, but it's been a long time!
@postmarketOS To be precise: searching for some old mobile device in general. More than one time I ended up with links to the PostmarketOS Wiki.

@postmarketOS back in 2019, when i was briefly in the r/unixporn discord (don't judge), i was complaining that i couldn't port ubports to my tablet (Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0). there, someone (@danct12 iirc?) said i should look into postmarketOS.

6 years later and that same tablet runs mainline Linux now, i guess i stuck around :D

@undefined @postmarketOS

A fun fact: I originally just wanted to run desktop Linux on my phone because I wanted to hook up a keyboard to use it on the go.

I was rocking an i3wm setup running inside a Linux chroot and using one of those Xserver app on Android. Yes, on a 5 inch display (720p), seriously.

I had to modify the keymap file to map the Super key to the volume keys so it doesn't trigger Android shortcuts. Fun times.

I believe a year later was when I actually started looking into postmarketOS and doing actual things with it.

BTW, the original PineTab was one of the first original device I got from @pine64 when they asked pmOS to look for a developer to work on it.

@postmarketOS I learnt about #postmarketOS way before my first #Linuxphone. Basically found #AlpineLinux while researching super-lightweight minimal (non-rolling-release) OSes, then tried to find a distro based on it and found pmOS! Now daily driving both.

@postmarketOS I learned about it a while ago on Youtube. I was recently reminded of it on the Fedi when someone posted about postmarketOS working so well on their phone that they might be able to use it as a daily driver.

Of course I understand that it shouldn't be used like that yet, but it made me excited to see how much progress has been made.
