I struggle with words even though I knew this was coming. It’s only been 216 days. I’m scared for my family and friends. I wonder which ones I’ll ever even see again. https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2025/08/23/trump-chicago-military-national-guard/.
Pentagon plans military deployment in Chicago as Trump eyes crackdown

President Donald Trump said Chicago is his next likely target to crack down on urban crime. Military planning has been ongoing for weeks, officials say.

The Washington Post
Not hyperbole. Friends with loads of activists, immigrants, people with disabilities, queer and trans people. Then there’s the question of who can risk visiting whom
A couple of my trans friends made it out to Uruguay this morning and I almost sobbed in relief.
@hacks4pancakes Why Uruguay?

@Steve @hacks4pancakes

Progressive on trans issues, relatively straightforward path to citizenship, not terrible cost of living, stable financial system / government, and reasonable compatibility with US / Euro time zones

@hacks4pancakes This is a stupid fucking timeline but I'm glad there's good news in it.
@hacks4pancakes i have a couple going next week 😭
@hacks4pancakes also, don't forget that they can just as well consider taking citizens hostage to reach for expats... Everything is going to shits 🙈
@DJGummikuh they don’t need to do that - they can just increase our taxes to 110%
@hacks4pancakes ah shit I completely glossed over the fact that despite living abroad now, you're still US citizen 🤦‍♂️
@DJGummikuh @hacks4pancakes from a friend who is now a former US citizen, it is worth going through rescinding it to avoid tax questions
@doug @DJGummikuh it takes time and money to get citizenship almost anywhere. That’s a step beyond PR. You can’t rescind until you are a citizen of another country. And that does cost you your vote.

@hacks4pancakes as a white cisgendered straight male I'm theoretically at the least risk from the Trump admin and there is absolutely *no way* I am going near a US border agent for the foreseeable future.

But that's also a relatively easy decision for me to make: I don't have family members trapped there, "only" friends and business associates, no employer pressures, etc

@hacks4pancakes I think I've decided the only reason I seem "okay" is on account of all the dissociation. (Thanks, childhood!) I want to leave but I cannot bear the thought of abandoning so many people. Every moment remaining here feels like a living death.

@hacks4pancakes I still can't believe there are people who I had previously considered reasonably well adjusted are seemingly ok with this.

I am trying very hard to focus on literally anything else.

@hacks4pancakes Oh. Great. What a shitshow 🫠 I can’t even imagine.
@hacks4pancakes The options to protect ourselves through hiding and avoiding contact are becoming less viable. When does fighting back become the only remaining option?

@hacks4pancakes

It's just horrific. Just angry, racist, violent retaliation against everyone who didn't vote for him, and the entirety of the Republican party is just totally OK with it.

I've never hoped for more people to just keel over than I do right now.

@hacks4pancakes - And yet TACOS Spouse is not a US citizen. All documents paid for to get her uneducated fanny into the USA for his sick breeding purposes. His kids should be deported as well.
@hacks4pancakes I live in Chicago. Not cool.

@hacks4pancakes We have resolved to stay and fight until we can’t anymore. The kids have put down roots, and we believe Chicago to be our best U.S. location for survival. I am hopeful we’ll pull through. I won’t let politicians take my retirement from me yet again.

Unfortunately our exit plan has become moderately hostile by way of the EHRC’s new rules in the UK. The choice between the threat of imminent fascism and the removal of basic human rights is a ludicrous one to make.

@hacks4pancakes City by city, state by state... America is over.
