Having 1 million followers is like throwing confetti into a hurricane: people cheer, platforms profit, and you're left sweeping your own glitter off the floor. Everyone loves the art, shares it, while we're over here perfecting the art of checking our bank balance with one eye closed.
Now AI companies are scraping our "worthless" art to train billion-dollar generators. Apparently our work was valuable enough to steal, just not valuable enough to pay for. It's like being robbed by someone who insists they're doing you a favor by "increasing your exposure."

So here we are on Patreon, asking our actual fans to bridge the gap between "viral content" and "paying rent." Because in this rigged game, the only reliable currency left is people who genuinely give a damn about creators surviving.

@warandpeas well, every time I see one of your posts it makes me smile and brightens my day. So supporting seems like a no brainier. You have another member as of like, 3 minutes ago
@dazfuller Thank you so much! We're so glad to keep on making you smile!
@warandpeas glad to be a current supporter! Love love love what you folks do, I hope that you manage to keep on keeping on!
@twoowls73 Yes! Y'all have to suffer through posts like this one from time to time but we'll keep on doing it :))
@warandpeas I will buy one or two signed books, but I can decide which.

@mapache Well "Hi Earth" is the newest and kind of a must. And "Once Upon a Workday" is a book we personally love love love. It's filled with poems about creativity and work-life-balance.

If you don't know the Fungirl universe, you you check that out, too! It's about chaos, friendship and some more chaos!

@warandpeas have you considered setting up on LiberaPay as well? That's how I donate to the folks running the Fediverse systems I use.

Either way, I've signed up for your $3 tier because you are someone whose work I always love to see. You create your own art and it is extremely queer-friendly. I know $3 isn't very much and I'm sorry I can't do more.

Liberapay

We help you fund the creators and projects you appreciate.

@jrdepriest $3 is amazing, thank you so so much!

Never heard of liberapay? We'll take a look at it!

@warandpeas I am on a fixed income, so I may have to drop my membership in a year, but for now, you have a new member. Your work is definitely worth it! I enjoy every single one.
Dear @warandpeas .. I completely agree with your opinion on the AI scraping and training. For me, however, the problem is somewhat more general: ppl want everything for free and if they don't get it, they're furious, or start to completely ignore you. I know ppl claiming they care for others, like the poor souls that sew our clothing somewhere in Cambotcha, but if they buy their next pair of denim, they only care for the look and the price, which has to be low. They also complain about the bad payment and treatment of ppl on some internet store, but go to most evil ones, as long as they have to pay less.

I'm sure I'm not a good exception either, since there's always something you do not care about as much as you should.

Art makes our day. Delights us, pleases our feelings, or is simply "beautiful". Social media, or any other form of digital communication made it harder for artists. On one hand you have to be present on social media, on the other, you have to give your art away for free, or ppl won't watch it. This makes "SM" a pun with a twist.

I'll be honest, I never sent you money. I watch your art on the fedi together with about twenty others. About five of them I sent money on a regular basis. That's my budget. Should I stop following and watching your art? Truely, I've been thinking of this to be more fair. On the other hand, maybe me watching and re-noting your posts make them find another person who's spending some money on your art.

I don't need to have anything for free, but honestly, there is
so much stuff out there in the digital wild, that I can't consume everything and I always find something that is free. However.. after I watched some artists' work for quite a while, I started to give them money for their work.

I like you and your art and if my budget will be sufficient, I like to increase you bank account levels a bit. I do wish that there'll be enough ppl doing it to make you a comfortable living.

@fabos Thank you for your comment! First of all: If you're supporting artists, that's amazing!

Of course we'd like it even more if we'd be among the ones you support but it's totally up to you to decide what you like most. The thing we learned is: If we don't support what we love it'll disappear. As people who grew up in the 90s we can say, MANY things disappeared that we'd love to have back.

It doesn't really matter if it's us or someone else. It'd just be great if more people were like you.

@warandpeas the same people who would always do things "on-spec" until you finally got some leverage over them and forced them to hire you.
@warandpeas
Hence why I tell people that, if you're going to be posting on social media, it might as well be a platform like this, where the growth will actually better the world.

@warandpeas And used it all to train the AI that does all that artwork and stuff without all the hassle wetware brings. All those thoughts and feelings you spewed...

I bet they can build a model of you from it. Predict what you'll say. How you'll react. Another to pattern match the ether to AI model in database.

They may even think they saved you already. It probably reassures them this is so every time they might doubt--if ever.

You're a few gigabytes in size after training. ;)

@warandpeas I wonder if that's what happens at Mara Lago. They introduce these people to their saved version.

"Here, talk to yourself. Ask yourself."

Then they come out with a plastic face all bent and distorted.

"We can build saved you a new body, but for now, here's a new face for the old you."

In case anyone wants to know, this meme is from the movie Race to Witch Mountain (2009).
@warandpeas it's important that we pay artists for their work.

@warandpeas

globalcomix.com or tapas.io seem to offer better deals.

Of course, most of people is not there.

@warandpeas

Art... 😮‍💨

It really doesn't bring you respect or money. You basically have to be Rembrandt to earn anything. People stop listening to you when you tell them what you do. People assume your lying or exaggerating your ability. People think they know how to do what you have laboriously trained yourself to do, and frequently downplay the amount of knowledge that goes into art of any kind.

Sorry, old guy rant over...

Blessings
🙏❤️🙏

@warandpeas but elon pays twitter creators... hence the plague of nazi and racist accounts that are run by people in india and bangladesh that are just hate farming americans for engagement
@warandpeas If you're on a social media platform that's not the fediverse you're basically making someone else money with your free labour.
@warandpeas Let's be honest, they never paid the creators...
