It is so hilarious to me that we have FOSS maintainers begging for money to try to keep the development of NTP ongoing. NTP - you know, that protocol that the entirety of humanity relies on for access to the internet (or anything on a network for that matter).

Meanwhile the o̶l̶i̶g̶a̶r̶c̶h̶y̶ broligarchy makes billions of the backs of these people.

Anyways, they're currently at $495 of $1000 for their 2025 goal. Go throw them some $ if you feel so inclined.

@k3ym0 The image features a webpage for the Mills-Spring Fund, established in 2024 to honor David L. Mills, an Internet Pioneer and architect of the Network Time Protocol. The page includes a header with the fund's name and a description of its purpose. Below the header, there is a prominent image of a futuristic clock tower surrounded by a vibrant sky and flying vehicles, symbolizing the fund's connection to timekeeping and technology. The main section of the page contains a donation form with options to choose a gift amount, including $10, $25, $50, and a custom amount. The form also includes fields for the donor's name, email, and address, with placeholders provided for each field. The form is designed to facilitate donations to the Mills-Spring Fund, supporting the development and maintenance of open-source timekeeping protocols used by billions of users.

Hey @geerlingguy look like this is right up your alley. They may have met their goal for this year, but maybe your viewers could get them well situated for years to come.

@k3ym0

I'm assuming ongoing development is just timezone changes?

OR are we destined to follow DNS and have stupid shit like NTPoverHTTPS in the future?

@kajer try Oblivious-NTPoHTTPS ;)
@k3ym0 systemd-networkd-timed would like a word with you

@kajer @k3ym0

Kind think you have that backwards. Give them enough money, and we could have HTTPSoverNTPoverDNS

@NuclearOatmeal @k3ym0 Can we ICMP tunnel for good measure? Or are we already at 650MTU?

@NuclearOatmeal @kajer hold on let me ping the maintainer of pool.ntp.org...

hey @ask - I have a feature request for you.

@NuclearOatmeal @kajer @k3ym0 No worries, we can JS polyfill it and all is well

@k3ym0

I think they stretch goaled it. Now at $2925/$8000. I threw them some money.

@k3ym0 Corporate America basically only responds to crises, real or imagined.

So if they want the companies that benefit from NTP to get their wallets out, they need to have a crisis. It can't just be "please let's prevent this bad thing"—if stuff like that worked, we wouldn't be staring down the barrel of global warming—it needs to be "THE INTERNET DIES TOMORROW UNLESS..."

Then the gears will turn.

Capitalism doesn't respond to pleas, it responds to threats.

@k3ym0 @siracusa if I were not an independent. I would be rallying my organization to fund OSS infrastructure. They give us so much!
@k3ym0 they lost my donation when they used a genML image to advertise themselves
@k3ym0 I tried to give them money but it turns out I’m not human, which was a surprise to say the least. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@k3ym0 @siracusa done — I also signed up for ongoing support of LinuxPTP (which was on $0 for 2025)

This is in case I might (or might not) ever write that book about precision timekeeping, "A Brief History of Time…Keeping"

"from the minute-hand because of the railways"

"to nanosecond blackholes across continents"

It would leverage some incredibly good information I saw on a Web 1.0 site circa 2005, the sort of thing that is long lost, unless I get really lucky on another Wayback Machine dive. I'd have to find fresh references for the science anyway.

@k3ym0 the goal is set at 8000. Not sure where you’re seeing or getting 1000 from.
@k3ym0 yes, because we forgot to put a price tag.
@k3ym0 I wish OSS maintainers'd give invoices. It would make corporate donations & sponsorship a hell of a lot easier :|
@k3ym0 thanks for posting about this. I signed up for a recurring monthly donation.
@k3ym0 It’s ridiculous that they should have to fundraise for something so essential, but honestly, I’d feel worse if some corporation decided to become their sole funder, or embrace, extend and extinguish them. I feel kind of happy when something so important has seemingly avoided the corporate Eye of Sauron, and has to rattle the tin cup a bit.
