Here are 5 of the first 6 grievances with King George III that the colonists put in the US Declaration of Independence:

For Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us

For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world

For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent

For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury

For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences

@bascule The government of George III was entirely justified in its actions, moreso than the current US government.

@bascule Exactly! We’ve discussed this…!
@bascule To Trump's credit, he hasn't transported anyone beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offenses, or for anything else. He's transported them beyond Seas to be incarcerated for pretended offenses with no trial at all. That doesn't seem better, though.
@jonberger @bascule he's just being efficient and doing 4 and 5 at the same time.
Uncommon Sense

During the transfer of power from a legitimate to illegitimate rule, the illegitimate power must maintain an illusion. It must maintain...

@bascule Yeahbut the DoI doesn't count, as we keep getting told whenever we ask about the "right to life" in relation to things like death penalty, guns, lack of health care, etc.

@TimWardCam The Declaration describes the basis for the legality of the Constitution, so I thumb my nose at anyone who says it's not part of our law.

@bascule

@bascule does this mean the USA will be asking the UK to take them back?
@eatyourgreens @bascule Nah, will surrender to Germany so we get to be in the EU, single payer healthcare and tuition free public universities.

@bascule The troops were to protect the Colonists from Native American reprisals against Colonists for massacring Native Americans, stealing their lands, and expanding the frontier of the Colony; three things which the Colonists had been explicitly ordered to cease engaging in by their government, the British Parliament.

The taxes to pay for those troops were amongst the lowest in the empire.

The American Revolution was a bunch of tax-dodgers fighting for the freedom to commit genocide.

@metaning @bascule I came here to point this out, thank you.

Trump's actions should be condemned, but he has more in common with the ruling class of 1776 than we do. America was created to benefit the rich. We need a different kind of thing if we want any other outcome.

@bascule

Clarence Thomas: That's what I'm here for!

Trump supporters attack NPR for tweeting 'propaganda' before finding out it was the Declaration of Independence | The Independent

'This is spam'

The Independent
@bascule NPR (oh, damnit, I’d forgotten for a period of time that these fucks are shuttering the Corporation for Public Broadcasting) has had a yearly tradition of posting the US Declaration of Independence to social media and panicking the shit out of people who have forgotten its contents.
@bascule first read "quartering" as in "drawn and quartered" and was VERY taken aback
@bascule It became clear that El Gordo Punko has not the vaguest idea about the Declaration of Independence
