Here are 5 of the first 6 grievances with King George III that the colonists put in the US Declaration of Independence:

For Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us

For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world

For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent

For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury

For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences

@bascule The troops were to protect the Colonists from Native American reprisals against Colonists for massacring Native Americans, stealing their lands, and expanding the frontier of the Colony; three things which the Colonists had been explicitly ordered to cease engaging in by their government, the British Parliament.

The taxes to pay for those troops were amongst the lowest in the empire.

The American Revolution was a bunch of tax-dodgers fighting for the freedom to commit genocide.

@metaning @bascule I came here to point this out, thank you.

Trump's actions should be condemned, but he has more in common with the ruling class of 1776 than we do. America was created to benefit the rich. We need a different kind of thing if we want any other outcome.
