I am torn between the easy interface of #TrueNAS & the stability of #FreeBSD with the slightly better integration of #ZFS. I want to upgrade to latest BSD but TrueNAS switched to Linux under the covers. Anyone else come to a similar dilemma? #RunBSD#BSDHelp#BSDAdvice
@curtosis I guess the real question is if it is easy to cross migrate to zvault. I like the newer UI, I just would hate to lose capability. But looks pretty good from the screenshots
@Jazzynupe@curtosis I did a migration a few weeks ago and it is really easy now as zvault is basically a community build of truenas. If those proprietary bits did something, I'm not missing them...
@mazhe@Jazzynupe IIRC it’s things like HA failover and enclosure management. My budget (not to mention my power bill) doesn’t have room for me to worry about that. :)
@curtosis@mazhe@Jazzynupe Thanks everyone. Sounds like I have a weekend project. I have been concerned since iX abandoned FreeBSD & the underlying OS becoming stale. At least I know I have options now. Will go in order of UI functions. With base FreeBSD as a last resort.
@curtosis @mazhe For reference, here is my config. I got cheap hardware from ebay but so far it has been solid for about a year. Configuration is the following: 1 boot vdev with mirrored 500gb ssds 3 data vdevs with 5 - 2tb drives in raidz2 for safety + 2 1.5tb cache ssds 1 system vdev with 3 - 1.5tb ssd in raidz1 for jails/vm for apps & some spares just in case. All are 2.5 Inch to TRY to save some power. May get a 3.5inch JBOD but I still have room #zvaultio#RunBSD#BSDAdvice
@curtosis@mazhe just an update. I transitioned to #XIGMANAS since #zVault still has not had an update in 6 months. I may go back to it later but Xigmanas is up to #FreeBSD 14.3 so it is further along. Still learning, but I am using @BastilleBSD for my @jellyfin jail configuration & management. Things could be easier but they are at least working. 😁👍🏾 #RunBSD#BSD#NAS#Storage#ZFS
