Internet Archive Is Now a Federal Depository Library

Internet Archive, a nonprofit library based in San Francisco, has been given federal depository status. The designation was given by California Senator Alex Padilla, in a letter sent to the Government Publishing Office.

@gutenberg_org What does this mean for users? What is changing?
The fact that something is becoming federal under the current government raises many doubts and questions.
Given that the present administration is attempting to censor, restrict access to, or even delete items (articles, books, documentaries) that do not align with their ideology.

@DqTube the attached article says

> The Federal Depository Library Program is a government program, established in 1813, for the purpose of making federal government publications accessible to the public at no cost.

So I think it means they'll have miss government documents

@DqTube @gutenberg_org i agree with these questions and I am also interested in knowing the implications. Especially because the Internet Archive is used widely across the world, not only the US.

@gutenberg_org apparently libraries can qualify for this or be chosen for this but can also take the status or leave it,

and they get to serve federal documents free of charge to the end user

but they _have_ to serve federal documents free of charge to the end user

unfortunately, i couldn't figure out if they get reimbursed for any additional operating costs at some other level

either way, uh, cool i guess?

I don't what that this designation means, but if the result is opening it up to Federal influence and censorship, we've just lost an incredibly important part of the internet
