Today the car that would have been replaced by the recently featured Rover-based ‘Gladys’ or P6BS/P9, the Alvis TE 21, seen here at the British Motor Museum in 2024. This elegant body style originated with the Swiss coach-builder Graber but production switched to the UK as volumes increased. This 1965 example was one of the last of the original production run. The motor industry is full of connections and coincidences. Presumably hoping to remain relevant to Alvis’ future under Rover, Graber came up with its own idea for a P6 coupé, in which the identity of the base car was more visible than in the case of Rover’s own Gladys prototype featured yesterday. How does one enhance a styling landmark?  Carrosserie Hermann Graber came into being in the early 1920s, providing coachbuilt bodies for a wide range of mostly upmarket carmakers, amongst which wer…

Quite remarkably it is possible to buy a brand new Alvis with the Graber body style. The company was revived and is manufacturing ‘continuation series’ cars from its rich back catalogue. (3/4)

Alvis Continuation Series – Gräber Super Coupé - Alvis

It is immediately noticeable that the Alvis Graber Super Coupe and Cabriolet are cars that give the driver a feeling of superb quality and makes driving a pleasure.   With these models, we have engineered our six-cylinder 3-litre engine to achieve a good performance at low speed making it exceptionally versatile and enjoyable.   With... Alvis

While the Alvis car range was discontinued (temporarily as it turns out) Alvis continued as a manufacturer of many British military vehicles, of which my favourite was the legendary Stalwart. (4/4)

Looking good in gold. Clearly not aimed at introverts. The aquarium top is about being seen.

@lionelb Much favoured by Prince Philip. There is/was one in the collection of royal cars in the stable complex at Sandringham, the main thing I remember about my visit there!

@davidwilkins @lionelb Surprising to see that Alvis is still making cars, including period engines.

Inspired by the Facel Vega?
Good looking car regardless.

@Sir_Osis_of_Liver Very similar! I’ve posted a few Facels in the past, like this one. https://mastodon.online/@davidwilkins/113327449044653958

Attached: 1 image After yesterday’s smaller Facel 6, here’s more ‘French luxury’ with a representative of the company’s earlier Facel Vega range of larger, more powerful cars, I think an HK500, a model introduced in 1959. These bigger cars used V8 engines from Chrysler or other Mopar brands. Photo (sorry for the blur) from Techno Classica Essen, 2013. #davidsdailycar #Facel #Chrysler #WeirdCarMastodon

@davidwilkins
Incredibly beautiful car. I first discovered it watching the tv series Kingdom with Stephen Fry.
@davidwilkins Alvis TE 21, or Facel Vega? I know the latter is a much bigger car (with an impossibly huge engine) but I wonder if there was a Gräber connection in the design?
@scruss I’m not aware of any connection but I agree they do look similar!

@scruss PS - I’ve posted a few Facels in the past. Here’s one.
