Fuck CBS, Paramount, Ellison. This is no "financial decision." It is Trump taking over American media. This is Hungary. This is disgusting.

CBS to Cancel 'Late Show With Stephen Colbert' Citing Finances

CBS said it planned to cancel Stephen Colbert's Late Show after next season, citing the weakening finances of late night

Variety
Variety tiptoes: Ellison "has projected an image of being intrigued by the politics espoused by President Donald Trump." Yeesh.
@jeffjarvis I hope they both open a media company. This is beyond bad.

@jeffjarvis

What a grotesque sentence. You mean interested in fascism? You mean he's a fascist?

@jeffjarvis

I'm waiting for Monday when either Jon Stewart isn't on or he announces the end of The Daily Show

@jeffjarvis Just go back about a century and look up the German word "Gleichschaltung". The US as a democratic society already passed the point of no return.
@jeffjarvis The word is "channeling." Not "intrigued by." "Channeling."
@jeffjarvis What a weird way to say he's a Nazi.
Mass media are dead. That's what I've been writing about the last decade and a half. Good riddance. Trump will control the husk of what once was, as worthless as he. We must fight for an open internet as our last stand.

@jeffjarvis This.

Colbert has $75million last count

Let him set up his own "network" - not just "please donate" but a regular show with ads

I'd be patient for those

@jeffjarvis The battle for an open Internet was lost long ago.

@jeffjarvis I watch 4 shows/people periodically (on Youtube)

- Jon Stewart
- Stephen Colbert
- Jimmy Kimmel
- Seth Meyers

He's starting to silence his most watched critics and robs me of a quarter of my quality time during lunch breaks.
One more reason to hate him.

@jeffjarvis Just looked and Colbert was top rated in Nielsen ratings, with a growing viewership. This is bullshit.
Comedian's show axed after blasting CBS-Trump deal as 'big fat bribe'

CBS will end Stephen Colbert's "Late Show" next season after the comedian openly criticized the network and its parent company, Paramount, over a settlement with President Donald Trump.CBS executives insisted in a statement that the cancellation was "purely a financial decision."“We consider Stephen...

Raw Story
@jeffjarvis Have you _been_ to his shows? He's just not as funny as he used to be. Once his warmup comic even joked about that at a different event. You have to be funny in that business.
@nroth @jeffjarvis
Of course not. It’s all about viewership, and his ratings went through the roof. No network CFO would want to cancel their cash cow
@jeffjarvis this makes me so angry and so sad. Stephen Colbert is my very favorite show.
@jeffjarvis May all involved in this decision drown in a sea of profit death.
@jeffjarvis

This was the only thing I have been watching on CBS
@jeffjarvis yeah but who watches TV anymore?
@jeffjarvis it'd be funny if Colbert ran for political office in exchange:)
@jeffjarvis the media is obsessed with ratings not facts
@jeffjarvis Between this and not funding PBS this is certainly the end of democracy.
@jeffjarvis Financial reasons?! Caving to DT. Colbert will be just fine. He has a strong following and doesn’t need CBS. CBS on the other hand will suffer.
@jeffjarvis @inthehands The financial part being how Trump will screw them if they don't follow his orders?
@jeffjarvis The fukkin man-child is trying to eliminate ALL opposition as in FASCISM 101
@jeffjarvis Well, it's a financial decision of a sort... Financial suicide. 😏
@jeffjarvis send him a 1 way ticket to NZ - He can be our advertising man

Not all mergers should be allowed...

"There has been growing speculation that both Colbert and Jon Stewart, who hosts one broadcast of Comedy Central’s 'Daily Show' each week, could be under growing scrutiny from executives at Skydance Media, which is slated to acquire Paramount Global, the parent of both CBS and Comedy Central. David Ellison, who leads Skydance, has projected an image of being intrigued by the politics espoused by President Donald Trump, who Colbert and Stewart routinely skewer in monologues and commentary.

Indeed, Senator Adam Schiff, the California Democrat, took to social media Thursday after taping a 'Late Show' broadcast and said: 'If Paramount and CBS ended the Late Show for political reasons, the public deserves to know. And deserves better.'"

#uspol

@jeffjarvis How long until MSNBC fires Lawrence O'Donnell?
@jeffjarvis The rich always obey first. They have the most to lose, and the tyrant can take revenge on them the fullest.

@jeffjarvis It's a financial decision as the "president" would sue them for hundreds of millions if they kept the program

With all the law suite threats, it feels more like russian media takeover.

@jeffjarvis Hope Comedy Channel picks it up! 😁
@UllaMR
Guess who owns Comedy Central: the same corrupt corporation.
@UllaMR @jeffjarvis If you mean Comedy Central, that seems unlikely, since they’re owned by the same company as CBS. I wouldn’t be too surprised to see The Daily Show cancelled, also.
@etikemik @jeffjarvis Yes, Comedy Central. Damn. They need an independent outlet. I doubt if any broadcaster in the US is brave enough. US is a new Hungary...
@UllaMR @etikemik
Broadcast is dead. Mass media are dead.
@jeffjarvis I hope he starts his own YouTube comedy show STILL CRITICIZING the crap out of djt.
@jeffjarvis Exactly what I said when @cmdrmoto told me
@jeffjarvis Well - it's kinda financial. One you paid 16 Million dollars to a politician, it would render that investment moot if you still employ critical voices...

@jeffjarvis Whaaaaat ??? 😱😱😱

Are they nuts?! I LOVE Stephen Colbert. Due to the time difference, I can't watch it live, but I watch a lot later on YouTube. His kind of humor is so great, and in my opinion the best among all late night hosts I know.

I'm really shocked 😲

@jeffjarvis Life in Trumpistan seems to be getting worse by the hour.
@jeffjarvis Very sad news, indeed. Colbert and Steward beeing my favorite late night show hosts.

@jeffjarvis

I am gutted by what I see happening in America.

I do not know if America will still be a democracy in 2026.

Stephen will fight on, we all will; let's not be discouraged by this turn of events.

Elbows up!

@jeffjarvis #WTF while this a horrible development, it is also not a surprise at all. I'd expected this since the election of the orange fuhrer. Hopefully, the people of the Late Show will be able to excel for the remaining shows and be even more political than ever.
@jeffjarvis Americans need to boycott cbs and paramount.
