Fascinating poster from the American Holocaust Museum. Thank goodness we aren't exhibiting any of these right now.
@MarkHoltom How many boxes can we check already?
@Ihazchaos All of them, or so it would appear! @MarkHoltom
@Ihazchaos this is the main reason I started my whole anti-censorship project! I've been preserving webpages on the Wayback Machine about marginalized groups, women's rights, science and the arts, etc. And I'm also writing articles about how to use anti-censorship tools, because some of them are a little complicated to set up. 😺 @MarkHoltom
@Ihazchaos @MarkHoltom I can think of a solid example for ticking each and every one of those 😠
@Ihazchaos @MarkHoltom Every one of them except the last. Guess we'll have to wait until 2026 to see if that last one comes true or not.
Trump Lost. Vote Suppression Won.

Here are the numbers...

Greg Palast

@Ihazchaos
i was wondering which one US cannot check…

and here in Germany we’re getting pretty close
@MarkHoltom

@MarkHoltom We at Corporate do feel disproportionately safe, probably nothing.
@MarkHoltom huh. Except for fraudulent elections and military supremacy, that’s basically the entire west when i was growing up
@Kierkegaanks @MarkHoltom Right? And even those two, if you look a little harder...

@MarkHoltom

It is not as if these telltales are not known but rather why it still is happening again.

Fascism and tyrants however are not forever. May they get what they deserve. Also this time…

@MarkHoltom I don't remember this from that museum. I wonder when and where it was installed.
@MarkHoltom Its surprising that the follwoing are not included:
- a preoccupation with degeneracy
- Targeting of sexual and gender diverse minorities.
- Labelling marginalised groups as less than human.

@MarkHoltom The interesting thing about the poster, which had been displayed in the gift shop of the US Holocaust museum according to Snopes, is that it was based on the below-linked 2003 article by Laurence Britt, who wrote it due to concerns about George W Bush. Which helps place Trump as part of a lineage, not a spontaneous abberation.

@PapyrusBrigade @MarkHoltom this is a fantastic op-ed and should be read more widely, even if it is already "the most reprinted and pirated article in the history of the magazine"
@PapyrusBrigade @MarkHoltom GOP always manages to dig deeper than the last bottom of the barrel. We thought Bush was the worst, but who will they find to make Trump appear relatively bearable?
@MarkHoltom it sure is ironic that Israel is also doing the same thing.

Was thinking the same thing 🫣

@rozodru

@MarkHoltom hahaha 🙀 ☑️ ☑️ ✔️

@MarkHoltom
This poster was once sold at the Holocaust Museum, but was never part of an exhibit.

Fact check: 'Early Warning Signs Of Fascism' sign was once sold at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum

A sign about warning signs of fascism was sold in the museum, but it was not part of any display, and it originated from a journal article.

USA TODAY

@MarkHoltom

Bitte we truly should and need to #warn about #Fascism today more than ever. So this #Poster is very #useful.

@MarkHoltom It looks like a normal day in Bulgaria.
@MarkHoltom It almost seems as though someone saw this and adopted it as a blueprint for their fascist takeover of our government. Except I seriously doubt anyone who is anyone in MAGA would ever even approach the Holocaust Museum. They are probably trying to get it closed.
@MarkHoltom
It's kind of crazy that you would even bring it up...

@MarkHoltom Weird that these things are totally happening in Israel...
@MarkHoltom @glynmoody reality check? Items on this list have been present in an obvious way in US society FOR DECADES!
@MarkHoltom A lot of those go back as far or further than my memory does.
@MarkHoltom mar-a-lago's new dinner menu? #nokings
@tylerparker @MarkHoltom
#Trump has never been THE problem.
THE issue is people voting for him ...

@MarkHoltom

All in plain sight - not even hiding !

@MarkHoltom We're like 13 out of 14 on this list.

Well, shit.

@MarkHoltom damn that's a stupid sign.
impressive

@MarkHoltom et on dira "on n'a pas vu" ...

and people will say "we didn't notice".

😪

Did a Holocaust Museum Display a Poster Listing 'Early Warning Signs of Fascism'?

The poster was not on display, but instead was available in the gift shop of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Snopes

@MarkHoltom So, the post was SOLD but not displayed at the museum. The poster is still being sold by the original group, #SyracuseCulturalWorkers .

Some background about #LawrenceBritt 's #CharacteristicsOfFascism, which was sold (but not displayed) at the Holocaust Museum. The article does NOT mention that Britt's list was obviously based on #UmbertoEco's version. Oh well... Fact check: 'Early Warning Signs Of Fascism' sign was once sold at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum Sarah Lynch, July 2020 "While a poster with the “Early Warning Signs Of Fascism” was indeed previously sold in the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum Shop, it did not originate from the museum and was not part of any exhibition or display. Britt wrote the words in a 2003 article in Free Inquiry, which Syracuse Cultural Workers reprinted and sold with his permission." https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2020/08/11/fact-check-poster-once-sold-u-s-holocaust-memorial-museum/5549019002/ The original poster is still being sold here: https://syracuseculturalworkers.com/products/poster-early-warning-signs-of-fascism #LawrenceBritt #CharacteristicsOfFascism #Fascism #Authoritarianism #SyracuseCulturalWorkers

@MarkHoltom

I'd love to own this as a poster. Do we know if such might be out there?

@bytebro

easily made yourself, or have a look at the American Holocaust Museum

@MarkHoltom there is also Umberto Eco's list, which is good too. different but the same. https://www.openculture.com/2024/11/umberto-ecos-list-of-the-14-common-features-of-fascism.html

@MarkHoltom

Not a single box left un-ticked. 😔

@MarkHoltom We are WAY past early warning signs here in the US.

edit: spelling

@MarkHoltom Tick "Controlled Mass Media" off the list

@MarkHoltom

Alas! We resemble this meme (USA).

@MarkHoltom @APBBlue Yep, most if not all of the boxes are checked. I fail to see how this is even debatable anymore. #Fascism is here. And to those who are okay with it, there’s an axiom I remember from my college days that perfectly applies to you. Lick it, stick it, and rotate it.
