They will try to tell you, “Resistance is futile.” It is never so.
@georgetakei this is exactly why USA is where it is today, so many people fell to the propaganda of their own media and government - like believing in a failed CIA coup of a foreign government that was crushed as expected as some sort martyrdom - when their own government is more than happy to crush their own citizens for far far less than trying to overthrow the government (feckless dems of course does that only with Palestinian protests) - the american exceptionalism got you here.

@georgetakei Your government is allowed to use specifically military weapons in the interior?
@tessarakt @georgetakei no, but the law doesn't mean a whole lot right now.

@Hex @tessarakt @georgetakei
The Defense Logistics Agency has the mission of disposing of obsolete/unneeded excess property turned in by U.S. military units around the world

Congress authorized the transfer of excess DOD property to federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.
https://www.dla.mil/Disposition-Services/Offers/Law-Enforcement/Program-FAQs/

So local law enforcement ends up with leftover armored cars to mount raids on people’s homes

Rather than, you know reducing crimes

Frequently Asked Questions

@AccordionBruce @Hex @georgetakei I never fully grasped the term law enforcement. I recently heard it in one of the legal podcasts dealing with the Trump administration, and it was somehow distinct from policing.

@tessarakt @AccordionBruce @Hex @georgetakei The cops are not enforcers like people, especially them, actually think. That's the courts and prisons. Police actual duties are investigation, apprehension, and prevention (well...not according to scotus I guess).

But in practice they fully believe they are the enforcers and do so with impunity, whether they know the law or not (in fact they can use their ignorance to get away with shit).

America wasn't far from a fascist state to begin with.

@crazyeddie @tessarakt @AccordionBruce @Hex @georgetakei

In Australia we used to call them (police, cops) “wallopers” - for obvious reasons (to wallop = to hit, often with a stick ie a cudgel). You can still hear the term used out in the boon docks, sticks, or remoter areas.

We might have to gift it to you in the US…
😐

@tessarakt @AccordionBruce @Hex @georgetakei By connotation law enforcement is suppose to be broader than policing. Policing brings up the idea of cops on a beat or on patrol. While Law Enforcement includes ideas like regulation, financial crimes etc... But on paper they're essentially synonyms.

BLM "tarnished" the brand of policing/police so it's really more of a PR move than a real technical differentiation.

@mwguy @tessarakt @AccordionBruce @Hex @georgetakei

Cops did the "tarnishing" all by themselves. BLM just shone a light on just how bad the rot was.

@shadur @tessarakt @AccordionBruce @Hex @georgetakei Very true, I tried to convey that by putting "tarnish" in quotes. Sorry if it came off wrong.
@mwguy @AccordionBruce @Hex @georgetakei In German legal parlance, Polizei used to mean all kinds of defending against hasards to public security. Like construction police or fire police, and the general "police authorities". In colloquial language, people will only understand it as "the police", i.e. the states' police organisations.

@tessarakt @AccordionBruce @Hex @georgetakei

I reckon we went to hell in a handcart when we got to have a police force instead of a police service.

@DziadekMick @tessarakt @AccordionBruce @georgetakei if you read "The Lucifer Effect" it becomes obvious that there can be no institution that looks and acts like the police which will not devolve into an army that carries out a war on the population. When you learn about the history of police, it becomes clear that that was the point all along.

They started in the south as slave patrols and in the north as a private military for the capitalist class funded by the society, because they were tired of funding their own Pinkertons.

@tessarakt @georgetakei Depends on what you mean. Those weapons are not owned or managed by the military if that's what you mean. If you mean, are they the same exact weapons and equipment? Yep.
@crazyeddie @georgetakei that's a term my country's constitutional court used when it had to decide about the legality of the use of fighter jets. Turns out I only remembered the older decision, which was subsequently overturned. Now it's allowed in catastrophic situations declared by our federal government ...
@tessarakt @georgetakei Humvees are considered "dual purpose" but yes. Domestic police are also allowed to use APCs and things that are military surplus.
@tessarakt @georgetakei Los Angeles (a little south of camerillo) is under military occupation. It's full on naziism

@georgetakei

I expected to see American tank man...
....just not so soon.

Let's hope he doesn't disappear like the Chinese tank man.

picture 1: a screenshot of a newsreport titled immigration operation at Camarillo farm - Federal Agents clash with protesters. We see a single person standing in front of what looks like a militarized vehicle, thereby blocking its way.
picture 2: the iconic photograph of the lone man standing in front of a line of tanks in Tiananmen Square.

@fritzoids @georgetakei Thank you for caring about disabled people
@georgetakei They will also try to tell you the guy with the shopping bag in front of those tanks symbolizes Donald Trump.
@georgetakei Who the fuck said "history doesn't repeat itself, but it certainly rhymes"?!
@georgetakei The Borg used to say that and look it how it turned out for them
@georgetakei The Borg are wrong, Resistance is never futile!

@georgetakei altText please. What are we looking at?

1: Still frame from ABC local channel 7, showing a man in a white t-shirt standing inches away from the front of a military Humvee, on the highway.

2: The famous still from Tianenmen Sq, of "Tank Man" (also in a white shirt) standing before a line of four tanks decorated with the red star of the People's Republic of China.

@georgetakei Not sure the Chinese example ended well.

@georgetakei

Noem, the KILLER of innocent puppy dogs, is nothing more than a SLAUGHTER HOUSE SEWER RAT BARBIE!!!
💩Oops - I just insulted rats ... so sorry! 😐

@mommafish257 @georgetakei

... And Barbie, TBH.

And sewers are a collective (socialized!) effort to improve public health, I'm sure she has nothing to do with them

@georgetakei Hopefully, we never reach Tiananmen Square levels. It will be a black day in history when our military starts steamrolling over us in tanks for the "crime" of activism.

@georgetakei

Not a fan of the Borg then I take it, noted.

*scribbles*
George doesn't like Borg, cancel the Picard Borg eye-set gift.

The humor is how to deal with crappy circumstances.

@georgetakei They never show the part of the video where the man in front of the tanks climbed onto the lead yank and yelled at the driver sticking his head out.
@georgetakei Tank Man died in a Chinese "re-education" camp.
@georgetakei Tiananmen Square is not a good comparison and undermines your point. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Oq2k066A1w

@georgetakei I've just got to wonder what will happen if some of ICE's heavy vehicles meet a Florida sinkhole:

@georgetakei hey seconds later that dude nearly gets ran over and has to choose between stepping away or dying

he stepped away and threw a bottle at the car

because peaceful protest will end up with you dead, as ice is showing day after day. the only answer is armed resistance

@georgetakei I don't know what substance or mantra keeps these cosplay- militants going for this lame institution of "ICE", but I don't think they're going to be remembered in history as anything good. Just more weak sauce haters with a murder-erection walking around in public. Better not 'heil-ice or 'daddy-dump' anymore you easily lied to GOP simpletons. Take off the warning-sign-for-lil-dictator-support red hat and just dissolve this "administration".
@georgetakei admittedly tiananmen square did not really change the course of the CCP. Maybe there is something in the future.

@georgetakei

Resistance is never safe though. It takes courage, determination, preparation and support. If you want it to be more than one dude in front of a tank, or if you want it to win. We have to win more than history.
