Nextcloud Talk “Munich”: building resilient communication - Nextcloud

Introducing Nextcloud Talk "Munich" — now even more resilient, powerful and easy to get started with. Read this blog to find out more.

@nextcloud releases a new video / blogpost for Nextcloud Talk for #DataControl.

The blog post embeds Google trackers.

The video can *only* be watched on a Google surveillance platform.

The app depends on Google / Apple for notifications.

Does anyone else see the problem here? None of these are necessary.

@Blort @nextcloud at that point i m not even sure they get more views on yt.

Here's the thing. I don't even begrudge Nextcloud posting videos to YouTube. The part I have a problem with is that they say they're promoting decentralization, yet after all these years they refuse to post to any alternative.

Similarly, they provide no option to use @unifiedpush , but *only* allow Googles Firebase for notifications.

Using Google trackers on the website is pretty ridiculous though when such high quality alternatives exist, such as @Matomo .

They also never bother to explain WHY they continue to ignore all of these things that so obviously go against the values they supposedly stand for, Just crickets to any questions and more promotional videos / blog posts.

Hey there!

We do not use Google trackers on our website or blog, please do not worry about that.

As for video content — we have our eye on publishing our videos on PeerTube in the future. We will share an update as soon as we have news. This is a known demand.

And you mentioned notifications. If it is about our apps, please do share an issue on GitHub, suggestions would be invaluable: https://github.com/nextcloud

I checked with uBlock origin the day I posted that, and it was blocking 2 items from Google. Checking now I see Matomo instead, so thank you.

Why "in the future"? Tilvids confirmed they'd be happy to host you. I've offered to set up YouTube mirroring free of charge. There is no cost to you beyond giving permission, and yet I've been calling with no response for years.

@Blort @nextcloud @petrisch @unifiedpush @Matomo we used matomo since we launched our website, nothing changed - if you saw Google trackers it was either from YouTube (if you had enabled that) or a bug in the blocker. Hmmm, it’s possible there is an embed in a blog somewhere that does something bad, in theory, too.

WRT peertube, it is still work, we have to change things. Matter of priorities. Not my call, to be clear, just explaining.

@Blort @nextcloud @petrisch @unifiedpush @Matomo I think it's strange to use github for this. Why not Codeberg?

@bufalo1973 @Blort @nextcloud @petrisch @unifiedpush @Matomo legit question! So historically, we're on Github - long story, but soit. We think occasionally about moving. There are, of course, features to think about (we use a LOT of GH features). But also the network effect - yes, some ppl don't like github but it's still huge.

Personally, I would move if there's a properly federated alternative. I feel like that's not the case right now, technically and in terms of network size.

@jospoortvliet @bufalo1973 @Blort @nextcloud @unifiedpush @Matomo to me this answer is already quite huge. Because it 'is' an answer which blort was waiting for years I believe, for good reasons. I understand technical depth and lock in. It ain't that easy, but @Codeberg did hear that for sure.

@petrisch @bufalo1973 @Blort @nextcloud @unifiedpush @Matomo @Codeberg I'm sure I've said similar things here or there. I did recently do some research just to see what the options are and the pro's and con's, and that was my conclusion.

Note that that's just me, I am not in charge of this - at best I can nudge people internally. But I know, of course, what we would need to decide to switch.

@petrisch @jospoortvliet @bufalo1973 @nextcloud @unifiedpush @Matomo @Codeberg

Uh... actually I never even raised the whole point of using GitHub, so that answer is addressing something different. I think both the issue of GitHub and Jos' answer are both legit though, but a different issue.

Personally I care more about Nextcloud using a video platform that matches their stated values and not passing all of people's app notifications to Apple / Google.

That's the issues I'm still waiting to hear back about after years.

@Blort @petrisch @bufalo1973 @nextcloud @unifiedpush @Matomo @Codeberg the app notification issue - I guess it’s debated to death. Neither company gets content, they know as little as possible. But yes for power efficiency we do use their service.

The video - well we won’t drop YouTube, it’s where most users are. Same with Facebook - I don’t like it either.

@jospoortvliet @petrisch @bufalo1973 @nextcloud @unifiedpush @Matomo @Codeberg

No one's asking #Nextcloud to drop #YouTube. Just to give people a choice by *also* mirroring to a #FOSS, #decentralized alternative such as #Peertube.

Once again, Tilvids already said they'd be happy to host. I already offered to set up mirroring free of charge. The whole thing could be set up in 30 minutes with nothing more than a "Yes, you have our permission." (or by doing it yourself).

There is no cost to Nextcloud at all. It needs no staff resources. It takes nothing away from your YouTube viewers. It's in alignment with Nextcloud's stated values. It would raise credibility for your stated aims.

So what else would it take to move forward in the near term instead of maybe, possibly off in the future?

@Blort @petrisch @bufalo1973 @nextcloud @unifiedpush @Matomo @Codeberg it’s not my decision but let me see if I can propose it. Could you maybe email me in first name.lastname@Nextcloud dot com - with basically what we would have to do, the steps?

And thanks for pushing on this. If it’s that easy I hope we can do it.
