I can't believe we're still having to say this in 2025, but would people *please* scroll back to the top of a website when they're finished reading, so it's ready for the next person. We've even got buttons at the bottom to do it all in one go, it's not 1994 any more.
Seeing as lots of people are reading this, it's a regular joke going back at least as far as 1994, just thought I hadn't heard it in a while ;)
@_thegeoff we don't think we'd heard it before. if anything the vintage nature of it adds to our amusement :D
@_thegeoff Despite many years in IT before my last switch back into education, this one is new to me, and I LOL'd hard! 🤣
@_thegeoff don't be a flop, scroll to the top!
@dtl I've been trying to think of a good variant on that, nice!
@dtl @_thegeoff The "Be kind, rewind!" of the 2020ies!
@_thegeoff now I want to make a website where this happens
@foone Nice 😂 👍
My reflex is to do it with no logins/cookies/session control, just a website that only maintains one connection at a time and preserves state. Is a bit of jS to ping back with "user still reading line x" cheating?
@_thegeoff yeah that's what I'd do. bonus points: every time a user sends a "I'm looking at line X" ping, we send that out to all other users on the page, and it makes their browser scroll to the same point

@_thegeoff @foone What about CSS that trigger download of an image when the viewport reach bottom?

(Don't ask me how to do that. I'm from the backend lands)

@_thegeoff I keep a special pencil that is just the right size for this. Much quicker than the scroll bars.
@Extelec Just open up the keyboard and short the "home" key connectors? Nice.

@_thegeoff No, use the pencil to turn the manual scroll cog wheel which is on the right side of older monitors.

You can wind back the page back to the start that way.

@Extelec For a minute there I though you were going to suggest manually spinning the server's tape drive back to the headers, but that would be daft!

@_thegeoff Of course not!

You need a MUCH bigger pencil for that!

@Extelec 😜 🖖

@_thegeoff If you have a CD/DVD, I do have a 3d printed adapter for rewinding them using a pen, if that helps.

CD/DVD Rewinder by Extkits

You know that pain, you want to watch your favourite DVD or CD and find that the last person to use it has put it back in the case without rewinding it.Of course you can put it into your drive and rewind it to the beginning that way, but wouldn’t it be better to be able to rewind it whist playing another DVD/CD ?This to me is an already solved problem, years ago cassettes could be rewound with the use of a biro, or pencil and no special tools. Why not CD’sSo the answer was simple, make a 3Dprinted adapter that will fit into the centre of a CD/DVD and allow it to be rewound with a pencil or pen, just like a cassette.A couple of quick 3dPrints later the DVD/CD Rewinder was born. @Extelec AWESOME. Buying a CD player just to test it out.
@Extelec @_thegeoff wait no, it needs to be off center so you can spin it like a cassette tape
@alex @_thegeoff I tried an off centre hole, but the DVD didn't work afterwards.

@_thegeoff

Before you stop, scroll to top.

@_thegeoff Also, don't forget to upload back any files you've downloaded! Only then can they be available for others to access!

(also an old joke, but no clue where I've seen it)

@bojidar_bg
Limewire/Napster era 😂
"I just downloaded this Mellatica album from you, now you're downloading it from me? WTF?"
"Getting my album back."
@_thegeoff I gather you mean it about scrolling in a public setting ?😉
@Dincargi Well yeah, obviously, not like in the case of your bank account where your local manager has to scroll it back up and delete all your info for the next person, cos security.
@_thegeoff I so hate it when I come in at the middle.
@_thegeoff I just hook a rubber band (elastic for non Americans) onto the bottom corner of a web page and the top corner of the monitor. It gets tough scrolling some long pages, but it's worth it in the end since I just let go of the scroll handle and it spins it right back up to the top.
@_thegeoff Trouble is: Some will believe this. Probably not on Mastodon though.
@Gladso If we all start believing this and doing a tiny little something that (doesn't actually) help other people, hey, the world is a better place for it :)
@_thegeoff There were mainframe operating systems where a file's seek position was persistent. There was a rewind file command.
@davefischer See other replies involving really big pencils, and one with a 3D print designed pencil adaptor for rewinding a CD/DVD 😂
@_thegeoff @davefischer It’s all a ploy by Big Pencil. They invented laser video disks just so they could sell bigger pencils for folks to rewind them.
@davefischer @_thegeoff Now I want to edit those "back to top" buttons to read "rewind". 😂
@_thegeoff And the highlighter marks on some sentences that people leave can be annoying.
@_thegeoff It’s even eorse with the socials! The tine I spend oranising my Facebook feed! Complete chaos.

@_thegeoff while we're complaining about people's web habits...

If someone sends you an attachment on an email, don't make them chase you down to return it when you're done!

@_thegeoff oh yes. Sure. I’m sorry. I also think I forgot to rewind some videos at YouTube. My bad.
@sindum YOU'RE the one? You monster...
@_thegeoff it won’t happen again. Promise 😨
