Hi all. It's been a while since I've asked, but I'm here again asking for you to support your local fediverse instance. I know many instance operators struggle to make ends meet each month, and there does seem to be a downward trend on donations across the board. If you love this place and are in a position to and your instance supports it, please consider supporting them.

Thank you!

@jerry Post again next week so I don't forget. I sent my last dollar to some internet Porg dude for his brother.
@jerry (I meant that lovingly lol not dismissively)
@NosirrahSec I appreciate that and will do so
@jerry I cancelled my Netflix subscription so I could split that money between you, wikipedia, and a couple other small FOSS projects I believe in.
@Mustardfacial thank you - that is very generous
@jerry I'd rather the money went to you and this instance than to Netflix. I use this site everyday, there hasn't been anything interesting on Netflix for months.
@jerry To my horror, I realized I set up the wrong creator on Patreon. Fixed. Thanks for all you do Jerry.
@jerry What's the best option for you -- which gives you the biggest cut of what is paid? Currently on Patreon but Librepay looks more in line with what the fedi is all about imo.
@jaark ko-fi is the lowest fee of the bunch

@jerry

Where do you look on your local instance for any donation requests or links?

The "About" for my server doesn't say anything about it. Does that mean they don't want any, or am I not looking in the right place?

@cptbutton I don’t know where it’s posted, but I found it in a comment last year from the dice.camp admin. The donation link is here: https://ko-fi.com/dicecamp - thank you for supporting your instance!

@jerry Done, thanks Jerry 😀
@jerry Donated $ 25,-, thanks buddy 👍
@jerry I support this instance. It's easy to do on Patreon. FYI it's pronounced P-ATE-TREE-ON. It bugs me you say PAT-TREE-ON. Just my 2 cents.
@jerry mm. I wonder if fediverse donations trend with consumer sentiment
@grumpasaurus @jerry Hmmm, interesting thought. How far are you funded Jerry, how much do you need? I would hate it if your well managed server would disappear…
@sancla @grumpasaurus were funded just a bit over cost, the challenge is that we’ve lost a lot of members (and hence donations) and so I need to get more aggressive about downsizing the instance to costs aligned with use/donations. I built the current infrastructure when we had about 2x the users we do today and I’ve been hesitant to downsize because the mass migrations tend to be sudden and brutal.

@jerry @grumpasaurus Well that’s a sad thought, that half didn’t find a home here. But like you said, that’s signature behavior of a hype. The financial distress signals from other server owners are posted more frequently these days. Perhaps this is natural evolution of the fedi, separating the wheat from the chaff as we say in Dutch. It could also signal that we are about to get more mature as a whole. But when the amount of servers dwindles, some user may start looking for stable and solid servers like yours.

I would not be surprised that in coming years, due to economic and financial hardship, funding with get increasingly constrained. Perhaps keep this in mind for future (resource) planning.

Also think I’m totally underestimating the costs of running such a server, or the time and effort of maintaining it on a weekly/monthly basis.

Given that like most here, I’m a social and caring kind of person, I’m asking how we/I can help and be part of the endeavor. Lighten the load as they say. Regarding money, I’ll start pushing a higher amount and on a monthly basis, hope that helps. But on itself, it’s probably going to be a drop in the ocean.
