Linus Torvalds isn't just really smart, he's also a good person.
Linus Torvalds isn't just really smart, he's also a good person.
@doomgirl Well, "good person" is debatable - he can be a real asshole, some would say abusive, in technical contexts too.
Telling nazis who follow & try to associate themselves with you "no, I don't agree with you and go fuck off" should be a really low bar for "not an extremely awful person", not something you get a "good person" award for.
But I'm very happy he said this and that you brought it to my attention.
Well, it didn't pass the cultural barrier, I'm sorry to say.
And in general (a personal fault!) I'm really bad with direct challenges of a position, even in humour.
[ But good thing this got sorted! I don't want anyone to be under the illusion that I condemn socks with sandals! Part of my wrong context was, most possibly, that I didn't want to spread a harmful stereotype (I understand well why Torvalds wrote his post), but couldn't resist the joke. ]
Have the very best summer :)
:) No problem! I grew up with parents who found/find direct challenges difficult. I, and my children seem to have inherited this trait.
I had to look up the "arson, murder and jaywalking" joke reference so the cultural barrier worked both ways this time.
Enjoy your summer too!
@wesdym This is my view too, that belief and behavior reflecting it that some people are inherently inferior or unworthy based on circumstances outside their control is a whole separate thing orders of magnitude worse than being an "asshole".
However, I find "asshole" behavior typically disproportionately drives away people who are targets of the former, probably on account of how often it's utilized in the service of bigotry. As such, I do deem it a linked issue.
Regarding Linus, he seems to be working on improving in this matter.
@dalias Very true. But the opposite is also true, and just as often. Southern 'Gentility', for example, is very often a phony cover for genuine bias. Canadians may seem polite, even when they're cutting your throat.
Maybe it's because I'm a Southern New Englander living between Boston and New York, but I'd much rather someone just be a truthful asshole to me than pretend they don't mean what they're saying. Opinions can be sifted and sorted, but bullshit can't be. I just want people to be real.
@doomgirl How very lovely! Makes me even more pleased to be a #Penguinista ... with non-factory-standard plumbing.
Yay Linus! 💜🐧
@stringlapse @TimePencil @doomgirl My server wasn’t loading all his posts/replies, then. I should have gone straight to the source. 🙂
Thanks!
Yeah...
I already follow @torvalds but the most recent post I can see is from mid-March or pi-day.
Same as you, Ben - I can't see *most* of Linus' messages.
🤷♂️
Yeah, I really don't know if Linus is on Xitter or not. (It's not even my place to criticise anyone for their choice of social media, let alone someone such as Linus!)
The alt-txt reads "screenshot of a tweet from "Linus Torvalds @torvalds" replying to "@morgthorak".
The tweet reads:" ... etc
Good to see Linus' reply was an iron fist in a velvet glove!
(I wasn't trying to be critical; merely making a joke.)😁
@ramsey @TimePencil @doomgirl the screenshot is from 2 years ago, on social.kernel.org, which uses Akkoma (Fediverse, but not Mastodon).
@ramsey it's many years old.
@doomgirl A sad but unfortunately far too true fact.
I rely on Linux a lot, so I would have been pretty upset had he taken a stand the other way.
@doomgirl I like that he also gave all the right reasons why. So, by no means “just” virtue signalling, but actually held values and beliefs.
Definitely makes being “difficult” in technical discussions quite a bit more forgivable.
