@bagder I was always curious where all those new curl features come from, now I know.
@bagder "I'm an owner of an Opel Astra" <- ouch I can see where they went terribly wrong already. Usually after buying an Opel, most owners say "never again".
@highvoltage @bagder when I was about 12 my parents bought a used car from Opel (I think the concept of a “Jahreswagen” is/was something only in Germany existed. It is a year old vehicle sold by the car company at a much reduced price point).

@highvoltage @bagder

Some month later the engine computer failed fatally and had to be replace completely. They charged full
Price and even f-ed up the repair on the first try so they not only had to pay 1k€ for the repair but also fight to get it done right.

I never ever considered to buy anything from opel in my life!

@bagder
So that qualify in the "hardware on what curl can run" list right?
@Seb_Solon @bagder lots of head units run Android nowadays, so it's reasonable for curl or libcurl to be in there too.
@draeath @Seb_Solon its in many more cars too, not only the Android ones. A few years ago, curl was used in some 22 well-known car brands. Virtually every car made in the last few years run curl.
@bagder I'm dying to know
- what the problem was
- how did this person end up emailing you (are gasoline sensors queried with curl in Opel Astra??)
@buherator I believe said person had a problem and while desperately trying to find someone to contact, they find my email address in a screen on their infotainment system. A screen listing the curl license (among many others).
@bagder Sounds plausible, although that sounds like lots of work to dig up an unrelated e-mail address :)

@buherator yes but A) they don't get that it is unrelated B) I can't figure out any other explanation.

I mean, I do get these emails every now and then so this is also far from the first time.

@bagder probably the gas station is using an insecure certificate, try the -k option.
@bagder well at least he's nice. 😅
@bagder sounds like maybe a bad fuel pump, and also a broken fuel gauge. Curious if they bottomed out the vehicle at some point and caused damage to the fuel system.
@brektyme @bagder I would suggest consulting the manual to see how to reset the fuel shut off safety switch. Sometimes a physical thing hidden round the centre console. Failing that, have the vehicle recovered to N. Grayson Auto Electrical, Ulverston Road, Sheffield. Chaotic, not cheap but cars they mend stay mended.
@bagder I first discovered your blog through the „I have Toyota Corolla“ post and just noticed you’re actually keeping an email archive. This is the most enjoyable thing I’ve seen today and I’d like to thank you for it 😅
@kimar it's my service to society 😁
@bagder has there even been one of those misdirected emails thay asked about an issue you happened to know how to solve, even though it was not curl-related?
@wolf480pl I can't recall any such, no ☹️
@bagder well you'll have to accept that you are the King and reply to him nicely. 😄
@bagder Who cares if his car has a failure? My elbow aches!!!! 🤪
@bagder They should add "-k" in the option list of the line with subprocess.call(["curl", "https://tankfloat.local/status"]) in tank-display.py. Presumably the certificate has simply expired. *scnr*
@bagder hey I have a problem with my dog. There is a lady dog in the neighborhood and he keeps on chasing her, specially while she is on heat. Then I use the GPS on his collar to track him. In the App I found your address, so you must be the right person to ask: how can I train my dog not to chase female dogs?
@bagder curl -X POST --data "presenceKey=true&pushButton=harder" http://astra.trinidad/ignite || echo "404: Fuel not found"
@bagder I don't get it. What is the joke here? Explain it to me like I'm stupid
@superviviansunshine the car probably has the cURL license in the mediaplayer or elsewhere, which contains @bagder 's e-mail address, so he gets these random car support requests from time to time. Several more in his blog
@peturdainn @superviviansunshine yeah, a slightly longer version of the same explanation is here: https://daniel.haxx.se/my-name-in-products.html

@bagder My brother-in-law knows someone who can fix it. And he is in Trinidad right now as that is where my wife’s family are. From reading the email I’m guessing he is from Venezuela - loads of people escaping from Maduro.
@bagder if you renamed curl to something starting with q (or anything further down the alphabet...), I wonder if you would get less of these mails

@bagder

Of course, it's an Opel xD

@bagder Free as in you will never be freed from the life you've chosen.
@bagder I bet a curl command would be able to fix his issue.
@bagder Perfect coffee table book content. Just a bunch of confused emails.
@bagder my wife says the we (programmers) are the root of all bad things 😉
So I usually just respond, ”yes, have you tried to turn it off & on again”?

@bagder

Here's the usual solution:
Remove everything from the back of the car and then...
... reboot.

@bagder
Maybe there's a curl command for that.

Does his ~car~ motorized computer have an HTTP API?
