“Connection has been lost on the Madleen. Israeli army have boarded the vessel.”
French journalist Yanis Mhamdi (working for @blast_info) aboard the #Madleen, at 1:49 AM CEST:
“I am a journalist, and after covering the Freedom Flotilla convoy for a week, my arrest by the Israeli army is imminent. Humanitarians and journalists should not be arrested. I call on all my colleagues to mobilize.”
So it's happened: Israel has seemingly arrested the crew of a humanitarian ship, including a European MP onboard, in international waters, and in complete disregard for international law.
Their impunity is through the roof.
You would think Emmanuel Macron would be absolutely enraged to learn that Israel has illegally arrested French citizens outside of Israeli territorial waters, including a French official elected in the European Parliament.
And yet, his silence is deafening.
The Elysée and the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs have finally reacted in statements released to the press. Neither condemns Israel's illegal arrest in international waters, nor do they acknowledge its ongoing illegal blockade of humanitarian aid.
> “France wants to “facilitate the swift return” of the six French nationals aboard the humanitarian ship Madleen, which was attempting to reach Gaza and was intercepted overnight by Israeli authorities, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said on Monday. “Immediately after the ship was boarded, we requested to exercise our consular protection for them” and to “visit them” as soon as they arrive on Israeli territory, “in order to assess their situation and facilitate their swift return to France,” he said in a statement sent to the press.”
> “The French president “has requested that the six French nationals aboard the Madleen be allowed to return to France as soon as possible,” the Élysée Palace said on Monday.”
sounds like it to me too!
somehow, I don't think the reaction will be the same as when the Houthis do it.
@nileane We know what Israel is like. There's no way they were going to let them get through to Gaza.
It looks like they are employing their most lenient option: kidnapping the crew and deporting them. It seems that in this instance they do care a bit about their "reputation."
reposting my reply to someone I now blocked who thinks his political posts are more important than other users’ consent, so it doesn’t get lost due to my blocking of his instance:
Respecting consent is an important founding stone of the Fediverse, and people’s mental load can be overwhelmed by doomsday posts no matter how relevant they are, so, yes, please do CW and ideally tag them so filters (including temporary filters, e.g. for people needing to concentrate for a bit) work!
It was NOT arrested. It was boarded, if it was boarded, they were kidnapped if they were kidnapped. Tthere is no arrest possible.
If your mother was fighting about trees and branches on the property line, her neighbour taking her, did not arrest her, he would be kidnapping your mother.
One's mother, not yours. And the word arrest is rhe article's choice, again, not yours.
And the why is because of the power of the words.
The article uses arrest to assign unearned authority to the boarders.
@kevinrns what article??
I was using the word "arrested" because it was used by Rima Hassan's team themselves. (The images with text in English in the above post)
And also I agree with you that it amounts to kidnapping. So once again, why are you insulting me here when we are essentially in agreement?? Go bother someone else on the internet rather than someone who agrees with you for fucks sake
I read this report in your post as a report from a reporter, not the declaration of the victim (pictured below), sorry.
Its not an attack, its a point about how "arrest" is unearned used this way by a force wirhout the aurhoriry implied by the word.
I'm not correcting. I'm also-ing.
They can't "arrest" - its kidnapping. Not authority, just power.
