If you had to sum up the purpose of #Mastodon in one sentence, what would it be?
Serious answers here:
@haubles Mastodon is for building community online without requiring permission from a billionaire.
@skyfaller 100% β€” and we should never have needed it in the first place 😀
@haubles Meeting strange, new, wonderful people from backgrounds as much unlike our own as possible
@TeflonTrout I love this β€” the www. stands for weird, wonderful web <3
@haubles The twitter of the common good
@OSchell <3 yes, the common good! and good for individuals too
@haubles a digital home for the crowd who don't want to follow the crowd
@ronanmcd yes I love it! culture for the counterculture
@haubles federation of microblogging communities somewhat resistant to billionaire fuckery.
@marijn "billionaire fuckery resistant" β€” i'm getting that on a t-shirt

A prototype at scale of a decentralized network that embeds values and variations on functionality that are different from both commercial social networks and most of the pre-Mastodon fediverse.

"The Fediverse as an Ongoing Critique of Openness" section of Seven Theses On The Fediverse And The Becoming Of Floss is a good discussion of the critique of openness. As well as defederation (which as we saw in 2019 with Gab is a viable alternative to the approach of tolerating fascists that's common on other social networks), I'd also add FediBlock and its successors as a community defense mechanism, attitudes towards consent, and the anti-Meta FediPact as other examples.

@haubles

@thenexusofprivacy "decentralized network that embeds values" hear, hear. thanks for responding :)
@haubles Connecting real people.
@newstik I agree β€” helping people find their people <3
@haubles Mastodon is an application that provides a Twitter-like experience on the open, federated, cooperative social web.
@haubles An extension of your brain using microblogging in a decentralised, distributed manner to build, nurture & sustain your social networks, without 3rd party intermediaries getting in the way

@elsua I don't remember getting any implants πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’« 😜

"build, nurture, and sustain" – i love that phrasing

@haubles LOL! Not yet πŸ˜‰ heh

@Craktok never say never, my friend! ;)
@haubles I have my fingers crossed
