A prototype at scale of a decentralized network that embeds values and variations on functionality that are different from both commercial social networks and most of the pre-Mastodon fediverse.
"The Fediverse as an Ongoing Critique of Openness" section of Seven Theses On The Fediverse And The Becoming Of Floss is a good discussion of the critique of openness. As well as defederation (which as we saw in 2019 with Gab is a viable alternative to the approach of tolerating fascists that's common on other social networks), I'd also add FediBlock and its successors as a community defense mechanism, attitudes towards consent, and the anti-Meta FediPact as other examples.
