There's a new podcast series on the CBC by @pluralistic -- it's all about "who broke the internet?"

it's a blast -- the first ep is out, looking at google search, and I'm one of the folks Cory interviewed to talk about the heady early days of the 90s ... before things enshittified

check it out! https://www.cbc.ca/listen/cbc-podcasts/1353-the-naked-emperor/episode/16144078-dont-be-evil

Google Search was the gold standard — a product born in a dorm room during the internet’s early, idealistic era. But when internal emails surfaced they revealed a deeper conflict inside the company: was Google making Search worse, on purpose, to boost ad revenue? Google says its changes are all about benefiting users. Critics say it’s all part of a bigger pattern — one that host Cory Doctorow calls enshittification: the slow, deliberate decay of platforms in the name of profit. Guests in this episode include Ed Zitron, Emmaneul Goldstein, Clive Thompson, and Steven Levy.

"We’re building relationships with code" 🤯

Blimey! And no-one is worried about this? 😱

"Having compelling AI companions for work, to support mental health issues or as a romantic partner throws up some tricky ethical issues"

Andy Spence's blog post 👉🏻 https://wrk3.substack.com/p/the-emotional-economy is quite a read, although perhaps not as poignant as this other one 👉🏻 https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/ai-spiritual-delusions-destroying-human-relationships-1235330175/

Seriously, where is the limit? What's wrong with us? 😤

"Because in the real world, knowledge is earned through movement. Friction. Ambiguity. [...] That’s how curiosity thrives: in the space between expected and unexpected, between map and territory"

This post 👉🏻 https://www.joanwestenberg.com/how-convenience-kills-curiosity/ by @Daojoan is one of the many reasons why I love #Mastodon and the #Fediverse in general.

The friction that triggers (my) curiosity👌🏻😍

How Convenience Kills Curiosity

I’ve been thinking about the death of curiosity. Remember when you had to figure out how a new piece of software worked by poking around its menus? When finding an obscure fact meant wandering through library stacks, accidentally discovering three unrelated interesting things along the way? When getting somewhere

Westenberg.
One of the most important things we can be doing is imagining better futures and then describing them in detail. Design fiction, science fiction, speculative fiction, and - dare I say it - business fiction all matter and are a huge part of building the future.

During the time I've been away from Mastodon, I think I have also found a good reason to convince myself to *finally* decouple from #LinkedIn:

You silly boy! You can't build the new (whatever that may well be!) by clinging to a long-gone past no matter how hard or how many times you try!

It's time, at long last, to let go & move on to other pastures...

Good riddance, LinkedIn! Can't say I enjoyed much your user experience & your own motives over the last 20 years.

Oooh, and in case you're wondering ... This snap shot 👉🏻 https://gram.social/p/elsua/826791054949587547 has made it to what I'd call peak #Pixelfed with similar traction & engagement as I get on #Flickr.

Not too bad for just a couple of months, eh?👌🏻😍

Pixelfed

Of course, since I've been away from Mastodon for last couple of months, my (not-so-secret-anymore) #Flickr admirer, has been doing his magic a few times featuring these snap shots on Explore:

I think I'm going to miss him when I move on from #Flickr into #Pixelfed for good 😜 heh

Nocturne (Part Deux)

Flickr

[knock, knock] Anyone still home? I've been away from Mastodon for a couple of months building my own rhythm with #Pixelfed.

All in all, trying to figure out whether it'll stick around, or not, for yours truly, like #Flickr has done for the last 20 years (May 5th 2005).

It's the oldest #Web20 account I've had out there and I can definitely now see Pixelfed taking over for when things might go rogue.

Time now perhaps to resume my Mastodon mojo as well... What have I missed? 😎👍🏻

How can Mastodon be more visible to Bluesky? Bridgy Fed makes it possible but is tricky to use, so I created an interactive cheatsheet: https://jonudell.info/fedi-bsky-interactive-cheatsheet/
