Can I just point out how fucking COOL the Fediverse is with all its unique instances and fun URLs? Every few days I see one I haven't seen before and go, "Wow. What a clever name!"

It's like a big convention with people wearing their own little group badges to represent some of their interests and/or identity.

NONE of the other socials out there have that.

@Radgryd It is so fucking cool!

The other day I learnt about Sharkey and the blahaj.zone instance. I was like “what does blahaj mean?” and it’s an IKEA shark plushie! I thought it was genius. 😄

@EighthLayer @Radgryd And there's a bit more: the blåhaj is the standard mascot of the trans community. And blahaj.zone's server intro starting with "are you a friend of blåhaj" means "are you trans or an ally."
On top a lot of people working on Mastodon (and forks like skarkey) server code are trans. As are more than 50% of the authors of the W3C rfc for ActivityPub, the fundamental protocol of the Fediverse
@sashag @Radgryd That’s really interesting to know, thank you. ☺️
@sashag @EighthLayer @Radgryd almost as if all the antiDEI MFers are wrong

@sashag

I had no idea, thank you, great to know 😊

@EighthLayer @Radgryd

@sashag
There's even quite a community of blåhaj in the fediverse! Not all of us are on specific blåhaj or plushie instances, though.
@EighthLayer @Radgryd
@Radgryd damn right
@ireneista @Radgryd Has a very "what if Geocities didn't decide what city names were unilaterally" feeling to it all.
@xgranade @Radgryd yeah when legibility to corporate interests is the premise of an organization scheme, it really makes the whole social experience dramatically less organic

@Radgryd the wild instance names are such a delight, not to mention how viewing instances directly to see their custom theming can be mind blowing in this long dark winter of samey-same corporate social media.

Fediverse's defederated nature is bringing a geocities-esque renaissance of individual character back to the internet and it is absolutely beautiful

@dotjayne @Radgryd For a short time I operated my own instance (but the effort was not worth it for one user). And the domain was … noballs.lgbt
@Radgryd Back in the day we registered domains and bought additional IPs just for dumb jokes in the hostmasks on IRC. 😉
@Radgryd I couldn't agree more! Some of the domain names are very clever, and at least once a week I go "Wait, THAT's a TLD?!"

@Radgryd It's great! I loved stumbling across furry.engineer and going "wait, I'm literally both of those things, this is my new home now".

But that's incredibly tame compared to some of the instances floating around out there (which is awesome).

@notthatdelta Love how to the world these might seem niche, but here..

@Radgryd you can and you must! It's a great degree to customize your own handle and show who you are, giving some flavor at the same time (see the other replies)

It's great

@Radgryd I very much agree. The URLs are quite interesting and some are clever. I sometimes think, why didn't I think of that.

Then I smile even more when I think how that URL makes the #Fediverse much more strong

@nicholasr It makes it much more FUN, too! 😊

@Radgryd Haha, definitely! Reminded me of this post from a while ago: https://mstdn.games/@Sven/110294265517352552

Sometimes, there's this sense of awe for people carving out wholesome, witty and unique places for themselves and others. :-)

Sven 🛌 (@Sven@mstdn.games)

Today I learned that there is an instance called birds.town, dedicated to birding and nature. Honestly, how great and wholesome is this ecosystem and the people building places within it? 😄 Social media doesn't have to be arguments and outrage about today's awful politician, it can also just be about sharing bird photos and the love for them. There are many cool admins and people, building wonderful interconnected communities. Let's further build on that. :) #Mastodon #Fediverse

Mastodon Games
@Sven Yes, exactly! I also think it's amazing you can curate your timeline rather perfectly because Filters actually work on here. If you don't have the mental capacity for politics and the world burning down, you can just put your filters on for a while.

@Radgryd To your last point: CWs! I'll gladly follow anyone who is considerate enough to put all their "world burning" takes behind CWs. Especially since no filter is perfect and there's always a new Scandal of the Day, especially in the US. 😅

And the fact that they've been a part of Mastodon from very early on means that there's a culture and the proficiency to make use of them.

They're also great for stupid jokes. 😉

@Radgryd so I am not the only one loving this. It looks so cool in bigger conversations where every person has different address.
@madargon Yes, this! It's so cool! 🥹
@Radgryd also love it. But Blockchain implementation would be great to verify unique content with personal copy rights (nfts)
@Radgryd I know! I've been so enamored with the creativity and whimsy of folks here that I've gone to documenting some of my favorite instance names I've come across here https://shellsharks.com/notes/2024/03/29/the-whimsical-corners-of-the-fediverse

😂 this was me fucking around with Glitch at some point last year.

@Radgryd adding to the collection.
@Radgryd @alice fedi masto is way cooler than Bluesky, I wish the people I talked, were over here. They all say they get harassed and get a bunch of spam. I don’t know how I don’t get it. Curiously 👀.

@Radgryd true xd

well facebook kindof i guess? idk, i never had

but true

@Radgryd Love your observation.

It's funny because I have always felt that having your own "domain" is kinda cool. I remember back in the IRC days it was so wicked cool to have your own "bnc" (bouncer) which would give you a cool looking domain name when joining a chan instead of your random boring ISP-assigned one.

This is kind of the same thing and I really wished that the visible username was not tied to your instance but was actually a setting/preference that could be configured to a domain you have "proven" ownership of through some reasonable verification process (like adding a DNS-record!).

Anyways; tldr - I agree.

@Radgryd I think you'll find that the entire Fediverse is just a cunning ploy by Big DNS to sell more domain names.
