Angesichts der Entwicklungen in den #USA will @ZBMED eine sichere Alternative zu #pubmed aufbauen, falls da der Hahn abgedreht wird. So weit, so gut, jetzt frage ich mich: was wird der genaue Mehrwert zu #EuropePMC sein? Arbeitet man zusammen? Oder heisst digitale Souveränität hier dann leider "Lasst uns das nächste Silo bauen!"

Vielleicht weiß @kuf auch was dazu?

Infrastruktur made in Europe: Informationsversorgung in Biomedizin und Lebenswissenschaften sichern

Resilienz und Unabhängigkeit der lebenswissenschaftlichen Forschungsinfrastruktur in Europa zu stärken, ist angesichts der Risiken durch die Abhängigkeiten von den US-basierten Informationsdiensten geboten. ZB MED – Informationszentrum Lebenswissenschaften wird daher eine offene, zuverlässige und nachhaltige Alternative zur PubMed-Datenbank entwickeln. Diese alternative Datenbank stellt zum einen die derzeit verfügbaren PubMed-Inhalte bereit, zum anderen wird sie einen technischen und administrativen Rahmen für kontinuierliche Erweiterungen durch neue Publikationen bieten. Ein zentraler Meilenstein für die nachhaltige Verfügbarkeit medizinischer Fachinformationen wurde bereits erreicht: Die aktuellen Inhalte von PubMed sind gesichert und über das ZB MED-Suchportal LIVIVO zugänglich.

@RenkeSiems Please forgive me for jumping in in English - it is too long since I studied German in college!
My understanding is that Europe PMC is subject to an agreement requiring it to remove content ingested from PubMed/PMC if the US National Library of Medicine ever tells it to. So, the builders of a new tool may be trying to avoid that dependency?

@nyhan Okay - that's an important point. Maybe nobody thought of a situation like ours now, when the arrangement was formed. A new service by a new organization would avoid this dependancy and could still work when somebody is cutting the cord completely. But I still think we should cooperate and honour the work already done. And some institutions behind EuropePMC might also give a helping hand to the new initiative?

@RenkeSiems As @nyhan pointed out, every other services is relying on the provision of the metadata by the NLM and is building on top of this. Creating a solution for this is not purely a technical issue but will require negotiations with the publisher what the project will also cover. As stated in the press release this be not a silo at all - code published as open source and very early community engagement (pre proposal submission). And yes, there is exchange with other parties.
