[🧵] A short thread on why I reject the “Open Core” model — and why @silex stays 100% free & libre ⤵️

#FOSS #OpenSource #OpenCore #NoCode #Silex

With @silex, there’s no exit plan.
No “pro” version, no locked features, no investors to please

Just free/libre software

Questions about the model?
Curious how it works in practice?

@lexoyo @silex Yes, I am curious about #fossfunding and sustainability in general. How do you plan to bring in revenue using #Silex itself?

My own initial thought is that selling #freesoftware could be the new normal, like #Ardour and others do it.

#foss

@silex @opensourceopenmind Actually, Silex doesn’t need to bring in revenue directly

I believe @omgx contributes as a political act. #NoCode and #FOSS share values but open core is sadly becoming the norm in that space. We need to empower people with free/libre software not freemium stuff :)

Also Silex is a great tool to teach / learn web design

@lexoyo @silex @opensourceopenmind
I contribute to silex by greenIT conviction as a voluntary and it is a hobby (better than videogames for the planet). I work on it during my free time, each time I can. And I feel proud. This is my humble and very small contribution to a better world.
@omgx @silex @opensourceopenmind I'm happy you do 🙏💪

@opensourceopenmind @silex

As for me, it's part of my job at internet2000.net, we use Silex to build low-carbon websites. It’s been a smart business move: fast onboarding, great for training career switchers, full control over code, collaborative workflows on GitLab, deploy anywhere. HTML first, CSS second, avoid JS when possible

Silex outputs @11ty sites we extend via plugins. Security by design, web standards only

@opensourceopenmind @silex We’re just 2 part-time contributors with occasional help. I'm excited to imagine what we could do with more people and companies involved

Next step is to follow @Blender and drive innovation in a field that is very competitive - no-code website builders and web design
