Hi everyone! 👋 We still see people on the fediverse recommending OpenOffice, despite it having year-old unfixed security issues: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apache_OpenOffice#Security – So if you see someone recommending it, please inform them about the risks – but also that there are actively maintained successor projects (like LibreOffice). #foss #OpenSource

Some tech sites, bloggers and magazine authors also still recommend OpenOffice – also not aware of the unfixed security issues. So if you follow anyone like that, please let them know too! 👍

@libreoffice IT'S BEEN 15 YEARS PEOPLE. STOP RECOMMENDING OPENOFFICE.ORG.

My god.

@libreoffice yo how do people recommend openoffice all this time, can i see some screenshots?
@libreoffice I have an article written about alternatives from Europe. Just edited it. Thank you!
@libreoffice I never understood why OpenOffice people / Apache foundation still maintaining it - Is there some core difference to LibreOffice or is it like more a hobby pet no one wants let to die?
@DeltaLima There have been no major updates to Apache OpenOffice since 2014 (the last big release, 4.1). LibreOffice has hundreds of extra features, improvements and fixes. The OpenOffice Git log is almost entirely two people removing whitespace and changing HTML tags to create the impression of activity: https://github.com/apache/openoffice/commits/trunk – So we don't know why the Apache Software Foundation doesn't close it, especially with the unfixed security issues. It's bad for FOSS in general.

@libreoffice @DeltaLima Yeah, that is so weird. Some kind of contractual obligation to a business customer or something?
@ianmclean @libreoffice @DeltaLima my take is that they rake in large amounts of donations still - donations that should really go to LibreOffice, as that's the one that is actually maintained. So it's a very antisocial thing to do on the part of the Apache foundation.
@maltimore @libreoffice @DeltaLima Would really hope that is not the case, but who knows when there is no clarity being offered from Apache?
@libreoffice I had a look into the commits and I just can't believe what I am seeing
@DeltaLima Yes, it's shocking. Please inform any tech journalists/bloggers/video makers you know about this situation...
@libreoffice This might be interesting for you folks :) @heiseonline @ct_Magazin

@libreoffice @DeltaLima Has anyone been able to ever get a response out of the Apache Foundation for why this continues? Or even comment from the two maintainers that are submitting the commits?

@libreoffice @DeltaLima Man, even the reports the project submits to the ASF board read like Groundhog Day...

@libreoffice @DeltaLima it's 2025, we can fix all the whitespace in one commit with a linter, and add a CI hook to reject non-conforming merges.
@DeltaLima @libreoffice Looking on how it works, OpenOffice is no longer maintained (at least not really), it is just a dead project.
@libreoffice you should get off fosstodon
@frumiouspiglet they let an admin on there do a bunch of bad stuff, you can look it up if you want more info as I don’t remember it fully
@GroupNebula563 what's up with it tho
@lastcelebration they let an admin do bad stuff and then let that go unchecked for far too long. there’s a whole thread on it, you can look it up

@libreoffice

but that book from 2006 that I checked out from the library suggested I use OpenOffice…

😆

@gumnos @libreoffice I switched on myhome computer two computers ago and I don't know much about anything. (Well, I do know the presentations from LibreOffice doesn't work for me... Can't do notes and slides at the same thime ?!?!? )

@libreoffice I suspect that “OpenOffice” is just an easier name to remember and say given the alliteration. I also guess that Apache still have this project due to Oracle garbage.

In a perfect world maybe the entity called LibreOffice could also go by OpenOffice and maybe even other translations of “Open”. A rose by any other name etc.

@libreoffice top tip: put link to #libreOffice before link to #openOffice so your toot shows the relevant project's logo - scrolling through I just saw OO's logo+website and thought: Ah no thanks.
@libreoffice Because ChatGPT recommends them
@libreoffice Has Apache or anyone at Apache ever given a statement about why they haven't (or won't) close down OpenOffice and/or donate the name to The Document Foundation? Presumably y'all have asked them.
@mattst88 @libreoffice Well in any case… they'll likely have to when EU Cyber Resiliency Act happens ^^
#Vulnerabilties in #Apache #OpenOffice (#ApacheOpenOffice / #OpenOfficeOrg / #AOO), do not forget to replace by #LibreOffice for security and improvements (#DocumentFoundation / #OpenDocument / #OpenOffice / #StarOffice / #OfficeSuite / #ProductivitySoftware) https://www.libreoffice.org/
LibreOffice

LibreOffice is a free office suite

@libreoffice I'm currently recommending @ONLYOFFICE instead of LibreOffice, because for some reason that one manages to not screw up formatting of docx and xlsx files...
@libreoffice what about that nextcloud online openoffice

when is there a nextcloud libreoffice
@april It's been available for years: https://apps.nextcloud.com/apps/richdocuments (based on LibreOffice Technology).

@libreoffice I agree. Just by looking at the commits of the last 5 months suggests that OpenOffice is basically dead. There are commits, but mostly just syntax/whitespace being shifted around. That doesn't count!

So yeah, I support the call to deprecate OpenOffice because it's just practically unmaintained and insecure.

@Wuzzy @libreoffice i think the state openoffice is in is worse than unmaintained - they are maintaining a pretense of activity while not actually doing useful changes. it’s deceptive and makes them not worthy of trust
@libreoffice I think it would be best if OpenOffice simply did shut down
@libreoffice
I switched from LibreOffice to OpenOffice about a year ago because for some reason LibreOffice had become excruciatingly slow and crash-prone. It happened in different computers - old and new.
@libreoffice Give me LibreOffice, or I’ll use only Notepad!
