My dad sent me this article the other day and I literally laughed out loud when I read the title.

Only an American would write a title like that.

This City Was Just Named the Most Walkable in the World

Looking to explore by foot? These are the most walkable cities in the world, according to a new report.

Travel + Leisure

You should know that these "city rankings" are always a load of nonsense and should never be taken seriously.

They're usually put together in an afternoon by a marketing department, in this case, it's a marketing piece for a home loans website.

The goal is to get clicks, not to be accurate. In fact, the less accurate you are, the more likely you are to get clicks, so getting the intern to put it together in Excel based off of an arbitrary "scoring system" is a benefit.

@notjustbikes the only ranking system i've ever seen that's entirely objective and science-based and free from influence from subjective opinion is the Kill James Bond podcast's SCUM system for ranking movies
@vurpo agreed. The SCUM ranking system is the most objective science-based system I've ever seen.
@notjustbikes i think it could pretty easily be applied to cities as well
@notjustbikes The 'most livable city' ranking was intended to be for a business man visiting on a work trip. That is rarely mentioned when discussing them.

@LovesTha it was meant for "expats" and targeted entirely at HR departments so that they can evaluate compensation and hardship pay.

Every one of these ranking systems is nonsense. I should probably make a video about it some day, if I can bring myself to care enough about it. 😂

@LovesTha @notjustbikes It also typically only considers the inner city, and not the car dependent sprawl surrounding it.

For example, Melbourne is a fantastic city for walkability, public transport, and decent for cycling if you only consider the parts that are covered by the tram network.

Or just the inner suburbs that have AFL teams named after them.

Once you get out to outer suburbs like Wantirna South or Rowville... It's a very different matter!
@aj @notjustbikes Yeah, but business meetings aren't in those places, so why would they be considered?
@notjustbikes Munich - walkable? - *painfully laughs as someone living and working in Munich and needing to take the bus or train to get anywhere in a safe way and getting annoyed by all the accidents on the stroat we call "Mittlerer Ring"*
@tenkoman @notjustbikes I live in Munich too and it is fairly walkable. Yes the mittlere Ring is awful but in general you get by without a car pretty well and most people have everything they need in their day to day life in a walkable distance. Is it the most walkable city on earth? I highly doubt it, there are cities with superior infrastructure for that, but is it walkable in general? Yes I think so
@rarvaen @notjustbikes Fair point, however the more you get to the outskirts the more uncomfy walking gets (not a fan of walking in Daglfing or Hart) - within the inner zones, yes walking is fine-ish.
@tenkoman @notjustbikes stroat! Is it a street, a road or a moat that keeps people trapped? No, it's a stroat!
@notjustbikes Suggested new ranking system:
- Has an odd number of vowels in the name
- Has at least 3, but no more than 5 Arby's
- I dropped my ice cream there while on a family vacation when I was 5
- The map of the downtown area has a striking resemblence to my birthmark
- Has alternative forms of public transport, not just bikes

@notjustbikes in the 70s Hamburg was voted "Most beautiful City of the world' they only asked Germans in a time where travelling was not affordable.

But this vote still stands. And Hamburg still calls itself that. (And I personally think they are right 😄)

@notjustbikes @aj they especially irk me when they use measures that don’t make sense locally. Like the ones declaring Singapore one of the most expensive places to live have usually made car ownership a major factor in that when having a car doesn’t make sense for the vast majority of people there
@notjustbikes the abbreviation for marketing department is AI.
@notjustbikes don't forget to present the results on some shitty listicle format where there's a giant interstitial ad between each page
@notjustbikes CityNerd did not like this post.
@notjustbikes We have talked to 5 world travelers and they all agree.

@notjustbikes
Totally normal in Germany.
The best is, today it's city "A" tomorrow city "B", the day after...

You see this kind of no news everyday multiple times at least in the online versions of print.

In Spain's #Zaragoza 85% of trips are done walking - beat that, @notjustbikes !
@notjustbikes well, except the ones that rank Valencia as the best. If you ignore the crumbling infrastructure, sky high rent, and extreme heat in the summer, the city is basically perfect lol
