I should have done this a long time ago, but I only had wool yarn on hand. This bamboo sock yarn is perfect for the purpose. And it doesn't matter if my dyed hair stains them pink!

I have half a mind to decorate the top of the headphones with the same yarn, but I don't know what motif... My embroidery skills are limited. Anyone have ideas? #visiblemending #repaircafe

@Tryllesokker Woah, this is nice!! I'll have to remember this for when my headphones are worn out! You're just stitching through the material?
@svedigtype I don't know what the stitch is called, but you definitely could just go round and round in a spiral, I just tend to overcomplicate things ๐Ÿ˜… You'll want a sharp embroidery needle, it doesn't go through the foam, just underneath it and through the fabric cover.
@Tryllesokker Love it, and now I finally know what to do with my worn-out headphones!
@Tryllesokker Okay, I did it! Thanks again for the inspiration! https://pixelfed.social/p/felwert/823453820988180208

The pads of my headphones started to wear out, so I decided to crochet a replacement. Inspired by @Tryllesokker@helvede.net. #crochet #VisibleMending

@Tryllesokker what a great idea, how much yarn did you use, just one "roll" should be enough, cause I need to something like that :)
@woollypigs Absolutely, one 50 g skein of yarn should be plenty!
@Tryllesokker ohhh there someone who makes yarn popping up on my feed now and again, of course I can't find them now, but I gotta put an order in ;)
@Tryllesokker A tight macrame pattern over the top offers possibilities.
@Tryllesokker with ears of course. Floppy dog ears, cat ears, rabbit ears.
@Tryllesokker I love everything about this
@Tryllesokker I love it! I just ordered new pads but what you did is a lot smarter!
@nyhan But now you know how to make the new ones last! ๐Ÿฉ๐Ÿฉ
@Tryllesokker
Why is bamboo yarn better than wool for this application?
@nyhan Just preference, I was thinking wool would be too warm and potentially itchy. But I also get heat rashes very easily, it might be fine for others.
@Tryllesokker I don't hate this because it's a bad idea. I hate it because it isn't a bad idea.
@Tryllesokker nobody's seemed to ask but how comfortable is it?
@oct2pus The foam is just as squishy as before I added the yarn, and the yarn itself is very soft and smooth. I much prefer this texture over the faux leather it covers up. The yarn is sock yarn, so it has some added elasticity over something like 100% cotton. You could still use pure cotton, but I'm guessing you'd have to be more mindful of the tension. Wool yarn has some natural elasticity too, but I worried it'd be too warm.
@Tryllesokker This is so smart, and it looks fabulous!
@dereisenhofer I can't take credit for the idea, I saw a picture of someone else's yarn repaired headphones a long time ago, but I don't remember who or where. But yes, it's brilliant!
@Tryllesokker Thanks for sharing then! ๐Ÿ˜
@Tryllesokker Sound wave type pattern?
@Tryllesokker OMG that's exactly what I've been looking for !
My headphones are currently having the same problem. Is it easy to just sew and add the wool ? Is there anything to be careful of ?
@tangee I opted for non-wool yarn for comfort in warm weather. I'd say it's easy, but I'm also used to working with yarn and hand sewing. Just take your time, and do a double strand of yarn rather than single, so you don't have to poke through as many times. Your mileage may wary with how your headphones are designed.
@Tryllesokker thank you so much for your advices, i'll try soon !
I was thinking of crocheting mine but this is a great idea ๐Ÿ‘€
@Tryllesokker I love everything about this! ๐Ÿ˜
@Tryllesokker That's an idea! I need new foam for my headphones.
@Tryllesokker I'd love to do something similar. can I ask why not wool? is it cuz it's too soft/shifty?
@nebulos Nah, I just figured it would be too warm and get itchy on my skin in the summer. But I get heat rashes very easily, it might just be a "me" thing ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ This bamboo sock yarn is made to be more elastic than typical cellulose fibre yarns, so it's quite soft and shifty.
@Tryllesokker I think we have the same headphones and maybe even the same yarn :) Iโ€™ve already replaced the cushions twice. Do they still make a good seal to your head with the yarn?
@venite Yes, I can't hear a difference from before I fixed them. But they're covered in only one layer of fingering-weight yarn, so I'd be surprised if there was a noticeable difference in sound cancellation. And even if there was, I'd rather have soft & cute headphones that don't stick to my face and leave little plastic flakes behind.
@Tryllesokker yes the flakes really give that medieval dying peasant vibe, and then to top it off itโ€™s microplastics all around
@Tryllesokker I would try a cat-ear motif for the top personally, but I think any ears/horns/antlers with headphones are hella cute and fun. Love the color scheme !!
@Tryllesokker lovely! i've got to try this; i keep replacing the pads and it feels silly and wasteful. i have done something similar to cover a flaky headband, i just knit a flat piece and stitched it up along the edges to make a tube.
@lol That looks lovely! My headband part isn't flaking yet, so I was just going to embroider on it, but now that I think about it, that'll be a mess once the flaking begins... I think I'll wrap it in yarn instead, maybe with a contrasting roosimine motif ๐Ÿ‘€
@Tryllesokker Wow, I have the same ear pads and already had to replace them once... This seems like a nice alternative and I also wanted to get into embroidery; thank you!
@Tryllesokker This is so cool! Was it hard to do?
@Sagaliciouzzz Not at all, but I'm also used to sewing and other crafty things. If it's new territory for you, you'll need a sharp embroidery needle (so the eye is big enough to fit yarn through) and take your time with it, but it's absolutely doable.
@Tryllesokker Thank you for the material recommendation! Sewing is not my speciality, nor is it something I do regularly, but I did get quite good grades in it in school.
@Tryllesokker I'd be interested to see how you get on, I've got a pair of headphones with a peeling headband, protecting them with yarn is a great idea.

@Tryllesokker

Just brilliant!
Definitely spaniel ears made in one piece over the top.

@Tryllesokker that's brilliant and very pretty, thanks for the inspiration!
@Tryllesokker this took me back to primary school and making pom-poms โ˜บ๏ธ
@natureworks
Now, just cut down the middle of the yarn ...
@Tryllesokker
@xinit @natureworks Pom-pom headphones gonna be the next trend, I can feel it.
@Tryllesokker
Oooh, you just invented a thing! ๐Ÿ˜†
@xinit
@Tryllesokker Looks great, now I want mine pink as well. Keep in mind that on closed headphones, this will make them slightly less noise-cancelling.
