Ty Segall is so prolific, he finds new side projects underneath his couch cushions. He hooks up with Corey Madden from Color Green for his latest. The sound gives off glam vibes, like if Mott the Hoople was formed in an LA garage. Of course, there's plenty of good old fashioned psych rock guitar mixed in. Vera Sola: Ghostmaker
This EP is a companion to Sola's latest LP which came out last year, reworking a handful of those tracks with some new mixed in. It includes guest spots from Milk Carton Kids and Marissa Nadler, perfectly matched to the haunting, sparse cowboy folk. It's just a taste, but it's an oaky, barrel-finished one for sure. Enjoy!

I'm generally of the opinion that if your album is longer than 45 minutes, it might be too long. I'll make an exception to this one which is 80 mins of rocking from the veteran Norway band. There's a track on here that's over 20 & one that's barely 3 & along the way they hyphenate "rock" every which way from psych- to kraut- to good old classic- and more, so much more. Enjoy!

Saltaré: Modes
Randomly caught (and enjoyed!) these guys in Boston a couple years back so it's nice to rec their debut album. A fun genre-blend that brings together progressive bluegrass with folk and classical. Great compositions with fun arrangements (the "Spirited Away" theme!) and a nifty mix of instrumentation give this a uniquely sweet feel. Enjoy!

Here today to put this excellent music on your radar. Duo out of the UK making mostly instrumental music. The feel is sprawling and cinematic, the soundtrack to your favorite movie, but the genre jumps from detective to romance to dark comedy to French noir. Sean Thompson's Weird Ears: Head in the Sand
Sounding a bit like Garcia and Weir dosed the entire honky tonk and then proceeded to commandeer the house band, Weird Ears is psychedelic country at its finest. Jammy and twangy and a hoot and a holler and a half, this is a real fun one. If you're on the Daniel Donato train or even if you ain't, give this one a listen or two and enjoy!

After the first 15 seconds of this one, you think you have kind of an idea of what this German duo got, an updated motorik sound. Sure, there's that, but there's so much more. Each zig is countered by an equally compelling zag, afrobeat turns to krautrock, jazz freakout to psychedelic electrofunk. It's brilliantly constructed and easy to love. Enjoy!

Wrong Way Up: Totally Right
The opening track is called "Hang On to Your Kool" and whatever "kool" is, this release is positively oozing with it. This synth duo is from Australia, but the sound is purely African, and it's funky as all heck. It's impossible not to enjoy this. Amir Bresler: Tide and Time
This is like the piano jazz version of magical realism. Lovely progressive piano/bass/drum subtly becomes something more, grander, more... magical. The Israeli drummer working with pianist Nitai Hershkovits & producer Rejoicer create coherent compositions out of spontaneous studio experimenting. This is exactly what I want all my jazz to sound like. Dreamy. Enjoy!

There's so much talent in Nashville that occasionally (often!) you get some magic like this one, just by the sheer statistical mechanics of the community there. Sidemen joining forces for a greater-than-the-sum ensemble. Laurel Canyon psychfolk meets United Kingdom Britfolk with just the right dose of pedal steel. BASIC: Dream City
Chris Forsyth is maybe best known for his ability to, for lack of a better term, *shred*. So it's noteworthy that his latest project is more Eno than Crazy Horse. The band has already evolved in its short life and the latest guitar-bass-percussion trio is 90% rhythm: komische grooves, almost tribal. If anything, this EP is too short, but it works plenty well on repeat. Enjoy!

Gunn-Truscinski Duo: Flam
Steve Gunn has as many facets as he has frets on his guitar. While I dig all of em, from song-y Gunn to jazzfreakout Gunn, it's his quiet/pensive/gorgeous stuff that's my favorite. Man, I have no idea where I discovered this one and there is scant information about it anywhere, but man, what a delight of indiefolk (I guess). Like some wicked cross between Lucius and Rose City Band, sweet harmonies, some rocking out, interesting insertion of horns here and there, and the occasional French lyrics, but mostly just lovely all around. If you're a fan of Unknown Mortal Orchestra's early albums (and you should be!), you'll dig this one. Psychpop out of Philly that hits everything *just* right. Just the right oomph in the bass, just the right amount of fuzzy effects on the vox, just enough weirdness. Katy Pinke: Strange Behavior
The first line sung is "giving you head on the bed" which is definitely a choice. Even so, Pinke's lyrics are more quirky and sweet than provocative. Musically, the singer-songwriter has surrounded herself with an A-team of NYC talent, including personal fave Jeremy Gustin on drums. Caught this guy play this week and quite possibly he's what's next in jazz guitar. The album, featuring a great rhythm section, captures the allure. Wonderful tone and smile-inducing playing. There are moments on Crain's latest that could've been found on 70's FM radio. Others on 80's MTV, on an indie rock compilation from the 00's, a second stage at a folk festival in the 10's, and a algorithm discovery playlist in the 20's. Daughter of Swords: Alex
Alex Sauser-Monnig is 1/2 of Mountain Man amongst other things, performing solo as Daughter of Swords. Their previous release was a lovely, sparse folk, so the latest offering is quite a leap. The emotion-laden songwriting remains but now the sound is anything but sparse - a sonic depth sparkling with creativity, closer to early StVincent or JuanaMolina. Impressive. Enjoy!

Shai Maestro: Solo: Miniatures and Tales
It's all there in the title, solo piano, with little pieces (ie miniatures) interspersed with longer explorations (the tales). It's a study in contrasts, all the ways of musically point-counterpoint-ing: tempo, mood, volume... In the end, it's mostly just lovely, introspective, and calming. Cumbia is almost always a deeply enjoyable groove on its own, but it also has a lump-of-clay quality that allows it to take all sorts of forms. Here's an excellent example. At times, it morphs into almost Balkan brass, either an intentional style mashup or a dance-ready demo of how sounds from corners of the globe just mesh. All that and much more. Enjoy!

Soft Power: Space To Breathe
After a short been-too-busy pause, we're back! And what better way to return than with a band from northern Europe? These ain't heavypsych vines, though. This Finnish outfit finds a heady balance between the funk and progressive jazz. Occasionally edging psychedelic but always maintaining the groove, like Miles Davis leading the JB's, via Helsinki. @Neddyo Went to look this up on Tidal, excited to listen. While there, I saw that one of their recent singles had a cover image from a #DJKicks release I hadn't seen before, one from Quantic.
Turns out that was released this past Friday.
