Just politely declined a possible invitation to a UN Open Source event in New York. Honoured to be considered, but I have no intention to encounter an immigration officer under the current US administration. My best wishes to all who do not have the option to avoid this.🙏🏻

@jtk Yep, I personally cancelled a trip to the US for the same reason. Now the question is for the @firstdotorg conference in 2026 ? I assume the administration won’t change in the mean time.
@adulau @jtk @firstdotorg ouch its in US of course. Move it to Canada?
@claushoumann @adulau @firstdotorg It won't move now, but FIRST goes all over during the year and returns to Bangkok in 2027.

@jtk In my opinion, they should clearly relocate the event as an international organization to ensure everyone’s safety. There's nothing preventing them from moving to Canada in 2026.

@claushoumann @firstdotorg

@adulau @claushoumann @firstdotorg I think they would if they could, but there is likely a huge financial penalty with the venue if it is moved. I don't think the org can afford it.

International attendance is probably going way down in 2026 and there are going to be a lot of pissed off people and teams. Reconstitute remote participation?

I know you know this, I don't speak for the board, staff, or committees. I'm projecting what I think they'd say (and they may be unwilling to say much).

@jtk

Fair point. I always saw FIRST.org as the ISS for all CSIRTs worldwide, a place where every country can participate. But maybe that’s just me being too optimistic about international organisations.

@claushoumann @firstdotorg

@adulau @claushoumann @firstdotorg On the bright side, Kristi Noem will not be a 2026 keynote speaker :-)
@jtk
Honestly, it's not going to get cheaper over the next year, and it's wildly unlikely to be possible to run a conference effectively, even ignoring the international attendance. Switch countries and claim the actions of the administration constitute force majeure.
